Jensen State Wildlife Area's Horse Camp 1 offers rustic camping in Rio Blanco County near Meeker, Colorado. This 5,955-acre state wildlife area sits at elevations between 7,078 and 8,701 feet, providing a high-country camping experience surrounded by pristine natural habitat. The property was originally protected by long-time Meeker resident Helen Jensen and now serves as critical big game winter range characterized by aspen forests, scrub oak, and mountain mahogany. Elk, mule deer, grouse, black bears, and waterfowl thrive in this exceptional landscape. Horse Camp 1 is one of the designated camping areas within the wildlife area, offering visitors a retreat in nature with fires permitted within containment structures. The area supports diverse outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, and scenic exploration. Multiple water sources—four wells, three springs, and numerous ditches—support the abundant wildlife populations and provide excellent fishing opportunities. Located in the White River Valley, the campground offers access to the broader Jensen SWA recreation network.
