Waterton Lakes National Park sits in southwestern Alberta at the US-Canada border. The park's Townsite Campground is right in the heart of Waterton village, offering walk-to-everything convenience. Drive times from major nearby areas: Lethbridge (90 minutes northeast), Kalispell, Montana (2 hours south), and Fernie, BC (2.5 hours west).
Most campgrounds in our guide range from in-park (Townsite) to within 1-2 hours driving distance. Glacier National Park campgrounds on the Montana side sit about 45-90 minutes south via Chief Mountain Highway (summer only) or 2-3 hours via Highway 89. Flathead Valley campgrounds near Kalispell and Whitefish offer excellent staging areas about 2 hours from Waterton.
Road conditions vary seasonally. Chief Mountain International Highway (June-September) provides the most direct route between Waterton and Glacier's east side. In winter, this crossing closes and travelers must detour through Cardston and Sweetgrass-Coutts for a 3+ hour drive. Highway 6 into Waterton remains open year-round but check for winter weather advisories.
Waterton Lakes National Park packs dramatic scenery into 505 square kilometers where prairie grasslands meet Rocky Mountain peaks. As part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, it offers unique access to connected wilderness spanning two countries. The park's compact size means you can hike alpine trails, photograph wildlife, and enjoy lakeside restaurants all in one day.
RV camping works exceptionally well here because Waterton serves as a basecamp for exploring both Canadian and American sides of the International Peace Park. The scenic Red Rock Canyon and Akamina Parkways offer easy drives suitable for smaller RVs and towed vehicles. Wildlife viewing includes bighorn sheep, black bears, deer, and over 250 bird species.
Waterton's combination of accessibility and wilderness sets it apart. Unlike more remote parks requiring backcountry camping, Waterton offers full-service townsite amenities within walking distance of premier hiking. The Crypt Lake hike ranks among Canada's best day hikes, involving a boat shuttle across Upper Waterton Lake. Photography opportunities include the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel, Cameron Falls, and stunning sunrise/sunset views over the lakes.
Peak season runs from late June through early September when all park facilities operate and Chief Mountain Highway provides direct access to Glacier National Park. July and August bring warmest weather (highs 70-80°F), longest days, and wildflower blooms, but also peak crowding and advance reservations required months ahead. The park's Townsite Campground and popular Glacier sites fill quickly—book as soon as reservations open.
Shoulder seasons (May-early June and September-early October) offer excellent value with fewer crowds, available campsites, and cooler hiking conditions. Late May brings dramatic snowmelt waterfalls and emerging wildflowers. September delivers golden larch colors and wildlife preparing for winter. Keep in mind that Chief Mountain crossing closes after early September, requiring longer driving routes between Waterton and Glacier.
Winter camping (November-April) remains possible but challenging. Waterton townsite stays open with limited services, and the park becomes a quiet haven for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Most campgrounds close, but a few RV parks in Lethbridge and Montana gateway towns stay open for hardy travelers. Extreme cold (lows to -20°F), road closures, and reduced services make winter camping best suited for experienced cold-weather RVers.

Waterton's compact geography makes it perfect for RV basecamping. Set up at one campground and explore the entire park plus nearby attractions via day trips. From a central base like Townsite Campground or a Kalispell-area RV resort, you can access Waterton's highlights, make border-crossing trips to Glacier, and return to your fully-equipped RV each evening.
Day-trip itineraries from your basecamp: Morning hikes to Bertha Lake or Crypt Lake (via boat shuttle), afternoon drives along Red Rock Canyon or Akamina Parkway, and evening strolls through Waterton townsite. Multi-day stays allow time for crossing into Glacier National Park via Chief Mountain Highway to explore Many Glacier, Two Medicine, or Going-to-the-Sun Road.
A 5-7 day basecamp stay provides enough time to experience both parks without constantly breaking camp. Budget two days for Waterton's top hikes and scenic drives, 2-3 days for Glacier National Park, and flexibility for wildlife viewing or photography. Early morning and sunset hours offer the best light for capturing the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel and mountain reflections on Upper Waterton Lake.
Glacier National Park, Montana (45-90 minutes south): The American side of the International Peace Park features Going-to-the-Sun Road, Many Glacier area, and extensive backcountry trails. Campgrounds at St Mary, Apgar, and Many Glacier fill quickly but offer unmatched mountain scenery. Consider combining a Waterton-Glacier itinerary for the complete Peace Park experience.
Flathead Valley, Montana (2 hours south): Kalispell, Whitefish, and surrounding valley offer full-service RV resorts near Flathead Lake—Montana's largest natural freshwater lake. The area provides excellent staging for Glacier trips while enjoying water recreation, local breweries, and resort amenities. Less crowded than Waterton in peak season.
Crowsnest Pass, Alberta (90 minutes northwest): Historic mining region offering campgrounds with mountain views, hiking, and off-road trails. The Frank Slide geological site and Crowsnest Mountain provide dramatic backdrops. Good alternative for travelers seeking fewer crowds and lower campground costs while still accessing Rocky Mountain scenery.
For peak season (July-August), book Parks Canada campgrounds like Townsite 2-3 months in advance when reservations open. Private campgrounds in Montana gateway towns offer more flexibility but still fill on summer weekends. Shoulder seasons (June, September) provide easier booking 2-4 weeks ahead.
Waterton's Townsite Campground offers limited hookups (30-amp electric only). For full hookups including water and sewer, stay at RV parks in Lethbridge (90 minutes) or Montana's Flathead Valley (2 hours) like Bridgeview RV Resort or Spruce Park On The River.
Townsite Campground accommodates RVs up to 35 feet. Red Rock and Akamina parkways have tight turns unsuitable for large RVs—use a towed vehicle for these scenic drives. Montana campgrounds like Columbia Falls RV Resort handle rigs up to 90 feet.
Chief Mountain International Highway (June-September only) offers the most direct route between Waterton and Glacier's east side, RV-friendly with minimal grades. In winter, use Coutts-Sweetgrass crossing on Highway 4, adding 1-2 hours driving time. Bring passports and declare all food items.
Store all food, coolers, and scented items inside your RV or in bear-proof lockers when provided. Never leave food outside overnight. Carry bear spray when hiking, make noise on trails, and keep pets leashed. Both Waterton and Glacier are active bear habitats—black and grizzly bears present.
Chief Mountain International Highway closes after early September and doesn't reopen until June. Highway 6 into Waterton stays open year-round but check winter conditions. Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier typically closes mid-October through late June due to snow.
Pets are permitted at Waterton's campgrounds but must remain leashed at all times. Dogs are not allowed on most backcountry trails except designated pet-friendly paths like the Townsite Loop. Private RV parks typically welcome pets with similar leash requirements.
Layer clothing for variable mountain weather—mornings can be 40°F even in summer. Pack rain gear, warm jacket, sun protection, and sturdy hiking boots. Bring bear spray, binoculars for wildlife viewing, and a National Parks pass. Summers are mild (70-80°F) but evenings cool significantly.
