Big Bend National Park's K-Bar 2 Primitive Roadside Campsite offers an immersive desert camping experience in the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert in southwest Texas. Situated at the far end of a gravel road approximately 2 miles east of Panther Junction Visitor Center along the Rio Grande Village route, this primitive site places campers directly in one of America's most remote and dramatic landscapes. The site accommodates up to 2 vehicles and 6 people, with a maximum vehicle length of 30 feet, and is one of the few backcountry sites in Big Bend that permits horses (up to 4). Expect true primitive camping — there are no toilets, no shade, and no amenities beyond a small flat gravel pad beside your vehicle. What the site lacks in facilities it more than makes up for in scenery: sweeping panoramic views of the Chisos Mountains, Sierra del Carmen, and the Deadhorse Mountains create a stunning backdrop, especially at sunset. Hikers will appreciate the trailhead access to the primitive Banta Shut-in route that begins near the campsite. Wildlife is abundant — javelinas are common, so proper food storage is essential. A backcountry permit, available via recreation.gov, is required for this site.
