Burchfield State Wildlife Area is a 178-acre natural preserve located in Baca County in southeastern Colorado, approximately 12 miles east of Walsh along County Road DD. Sitting at elevations between 3,653 and 3,690 feet on the shortgrass prairies of Colorado's southeastern plains, this remote retreat offers a genuine off-the-beaten-path experience for outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude and wide-open spaces.

Visitors can pursue a wide range of activities including hunting for bobwhite quail, dove, pheasant, scaled quail, deer, and rabbit, as well as fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. The area is also recognized as a birding destination, attracting birdwatchers eager to spot native and migratory species across the open prairie landscape.

The site is managed under Leave No Trace principles, with visitors encouraged to use designated areas and pack out all waste.
