Late May through September is the prime window for RV travel, with warm Lake Michigan swimming, full campground operations, and long daylight for beach and trail use. July and August deliver the warmest water and busiest weekends, so midweek stays ease crowding. September and early October offer cooler nights, fewer bugs, and fall color in the oak savannas, making a strong shoulder season for RVers.

The park's main draw is over six miles of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline open for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing. Designated swim beaches have seasonal lifeguards, and large paved day-use lots accommodate RVs and tow vehicles.
Dead River Trail is a flat loop through the Illinois Beach Nature Preserve, tracing the slough where the Dead River meets Lake Michigan. Hikers pass dune ridges, swales, and wildflower prairie that support rare plant communities.
Sand Pond Nature Trail circles a small lake in the South Unit with boardwalks and interpretive signage on dune ecology. The path is short and level, good for a morning walk from the campground.
The North Unit offers access to North Point Marina, one of the largest marinas on the Great Lakes, with boat launches, charter fishing, and waterfront dining. RVers can day-park in designated lots to walk the breakwater and piers.
Illinois Beach is a well-known migration corridor along the Lake Michigan flyway. Spring and fall bring warblers, raptors, and shorebirds to the dunes, marshes, and river mouth, best viewed from the Dead River and Hosah Prairie areas.
Anglers can surf-cast from the Lake Michigan beach for salmon, trout, perch, and smallmouth bass. The Dead River mouth and nearby piers at North Point Marina provide additional bank access.
Multiple picnic areas with shelters, tables, and grills are spread across the North and South Units. Large paved lots make it easy to bring an RV for a lunch stop between hiking and beach time.
This RV is very clean and modern. We had such a great time staying in it and it was nice to have a place to get away from the heat!

Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park, IL, United States
The park sits along Lake Michigan near Zion, Illinois, roughly an hour north of downtown Chicago via I-94 and IL-173, and about 45 minutes south of Milwaukee. From Chicago expect a 50 to 60 mile drive; from Milwaukee, about 50 miles. Roads into the park are flat lakeshore routes with no mountain passes or tunnels, though RVers should watch for low-clearance railroad underpasses on some local cut-through streets and stick to posted truck routes. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Chicago O'Hare (ORD) and Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE).
