Late June through early September offers the most reliable weather for RV camping, with warm days, cool nights, and full campground operations. Early autumn, from mid-September into early October, brings Vermont's famous fall foliage and smaller crowds, though nights cool sharply. May and late October are shoulder periods with variable weather, and Ainsworth's campground is closed outside the warm season.

From Ainsworth, campers can access the Groton State Forest trail network, including hikes to Owl's Head Mountain and around Kettle Pond. Trails range from gentle to moderate terrain through northern hardwood and spruce-fir forest.
The park sits in a prime Vermont foliage region, with sugar maple, birch, and beech producing vivid color. Late September to early October is the usual peak window for leaf viewing.
Quiet mornings and evenings at the park are good for spotting white-tailed deer, moose sign, beaver, and a wide variety of songbirds. Binoculars and a field guide enhance the experience.
Lake Groton and Kettle Pond, both within Groton State Forest, offer easy kayaking and canoeing just a short drive from Ainsworth. Non-motorized paddling is especially popular on Kettle Pond.
Boulder Beach State Park, on the shore of Lake Groton a few minutes from Ainsworth, has a sandy day-use beach, picnic area, and lifeguarded swimming in summer.
The region around the park is rich in historic covered bridges, white-steepled villages, and small-town general stores. A scenic drive makes an easy half-day outing from the campground.
Low light pollution in the Groton State Forest area makes the park a good spot for stargazing on clear summer and early-fall nights. Bring a reclining chair and a red-filtered flashlight.

Ainsworth State Park, VT, United States
The park sits on Route 232 in Groton, Vermont, roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive from Montpelier and about 40 minutes from St. Johnsbury via Interstate 91 and US Route 302. Most travelers exit I-91 at St. Johnsbury or take US 302 from Montpelier, then turn onto Route 232, a paved but winding state highway through Groton State Forest. RV drivers should be prepared for narrow, winding rural Vermont roads with steep grades, frost-heaved pavement in spring, and limited shoulders, and should avoid posted seasonal class 4 town roads. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Burlington International Airport (BTV), about 90 minutes to the west, with Manchester-Boston Regional and Boston Logan as larger alternatives.
