Best time to visit Alamo Lake State Park

October through April is the prime window for RV travel to Alamo Lake, when daytime temperatures are comfortable and nights are cool. Daytime temperatures during the summer months are over 100 degrees, so most RVers plan trips between October and April. Late winter and early spring bring peak bass fishing and, in wet years, desert wildflower blooms. Summer visits are possible but require full air conditioning, generator capacity, and heat precautions.

Things to do at Alamo Lake State Park

  • Bass and Crappie Fishing on Alamo Lake
    RV parking available

Alamo Lake is one of Arizona's top largemouth bass fisheries and also produces crappie, catfish, and bluegill. A boat ramp and shoreline access sit within walking distance of the RV campground loops, and anglers often launch directly from their site area. azstateparks.com/alamo-lake

  • Stargazing and Dark-Sky Viewing
    RV parking available

The park is one of the darkest developed camping spots in Arizona thanks to its remote location far from city lights. RV campers can set up a telescope right at their site and view the Milky Way on clear nights. azstateparks.com/alamo-lake

  • Wildlife Viewing for Wild Burros and Bighorn Easy
    RV parking available

The Alamo HMA encompasses around 341,000 acres, and wild burros roam freely throughout this area, which is largely steep, rocky and rugged. Wild burros share this habitat with desert bighorn sheep, desert mule deer, coyotes, fox, and jackrabbits, making wildlife viewing from camp common. blm.gov/programs/wild-horse-and-burro/herd-management/herd-management-areas/arizona/alamo

  • Boating and Kayaking
    RV parking available

Alamo Lake offers uncrowded boating on a reservoir with no horsepower restriction. Paved boat launches with trailer parking serve RV visitors, and calm coves are popular for kayaks and paddleboards. azstateparks.com/alamo-lake

  • Desert Hiking near the Campground Easy
    RV parking available

Short walking paths and informal desert routes leave directly from the campground loops and day-use areas. Hikers pass saguaro, ocotillo, and seasonal wildflowers while looking down on the reservoir. azstateparks.com/alamo-lake

  • Birdwatching along the Bill Williams River Easy
    RV parking available

The river corridor flowing into the lake attracts herons, pelicans, bald eagles in winter, and a range of desert songbirds. Wildlife includes the Gila monster, prairie falcon, and golden eagle, and possibly Cooper's hawks and kit fox. blm.gov/visit/tres-alamos-wilderness

  • Day Trip to Tres Alamos Wilderness Strenuous

The BLM-managed Tres Alamos Wilderness lies near the park and offers rugged desert backcountry for experienced hikers. The terrain in Tres Alamos Wilderness is extremely rugged, and the most commonly used routes are the sand washes which dissect the area. A four-wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended to gain access to this wilderness. blm.gov/visit/tres-alamos-wilderness

How to get to Alamo Lake State Park

From Phoenix, the park is about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive, roughly 150 miles via US 60 west through Wickenburg to Wenden, then about 38 miles north on Alamo Road. The access road is paved but narrow and winding with some gentle grades, so RVers should watch for loose livestock and burros, limited fuel past Wenden, and no cell service for long stretches. There are no tunnels, weight limits, or low clearances on the route, but the final stretch has no services, so top off fuel, water, and groceries in Wickenburg or Wenden. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
