Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, CO, United States
Salida, located in central Colorado, serves as the main hub for Arkansas Headwaters access. Denver International Airport is 142 miles north (approximately 2.5 hours drive). Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport, 66 miles away, offers closer fly-and-rent options. From Salida, access the southern sections; Buena Vista, 25 miles northwest, accesses the central sections; Leadville, 34 miles further north, serves the upper sections. The area does not have one set route; instead, multiple entry points access different six-mile river sections. Note: Ruby Mountain campground has a narrow, single-lane access road unsuitable for large RVs. Dispersed camping areas may have high-clearance or rough road restrictions. Check current road conditions at the visitor center in Salida before traveling with large rigs.
