Late May through early September is the peak window, when the campground and swimming area are open and the Middle Fork River is warm enough for tubing and wading. June and July typically bring the busiest weekends, so midweek arrivals are easier for larger RVs. Early fall offers cooler nights, lighter crowds, and strong hardwood color along the river gorge. Winter visits are limited to day use because the campground closes during the off-season.

The Alum Cave Trail is Audra's signature hike, a short riverside route that runs along a wooden boardwalk beneath a towering sandstone overhang. The trail offers close-up views of the Middle Fork River and the park's most iconic rock feature. Trailhead parking is close to the campground and suited to standard vehicles; larger RVs should park in the main day-use lot and walk in.
The park's swimming area is a sandy, shallow beach on the Middle Fork River popular with families in summer. Lifeguards are typically on duty during the peak season only. Day-use parking is located a short walk from the beach.
Tubing and wading in the Middle Fork River are among the most popular summer activities at Audra. The river is shallow over much of the park stretch, though water levels and current change after storms. Check conditions before entering the water.
The Middle Fork River through Audra is a stocked trout stream in spring and supports warm-water species later in the summer. Bank and wade fishing are both common within the park. A valid West Virginia fishing license is required.
Audra has multiple picnic areas with tables and grills along the river. Group shelters are available and can be reserved. The day-use lots accommodate standard RV parking for lunch stops.
The rustic campground is the base for most overnight RV visits and sits in a wooded flat near the river. Sites are shaded and relatively compact, so shorter RVs and travel trailers fit best. A bathhouse, camp store, and dump station serve the campground in season.
Audra's mixed hemlock and hardwood forest supports songbirds, white-tailed deer, and common Appalachian wildlife. Quiet walks along the river or campground roads are productive at dawn and dusk. Stay on established trails to protect streamside vegetation.

Audra State Park, WV, United States
Audra State Park lies on Audra Park Road off County Route 11 between Buckhannon and Philippi in Barbour County, roughly 20 miles (about 30 minutes) from Buckhannon, 25 miles from Philippi, and about 45 miles (just over an hour) from Elkins. The final approach follows narrow, winding rural roads with tight turns and a steep descent into the river valley, so large motorhomes and long trailers should take the route slowly and watch for low-clearance tree canopy. The nearest airports for fly-and-rent trips are North Central West Virginia Airport near Clarksburg and Morgantown Municipal Airport, both within about 60 to 75 miles. There are no interstate-grade approaches, so plan extra travel time and avoid shortcuts on unpaved forest roads.
