Late June through August is the prime window, when Lake Champlain water temperatures are warmest and all campground services are fully operational. July and August bring the busiest crowds and the most reliable beach weather, so reservations fill quickly on weekends. Shoulder months of late May, early June, and September offer cooler nights, fewer bugs after early summer, and easier site availability, but RV travelers should be ready for chilly overnight lows. The campground is closed outside the summer season, so winter and early spring trips are not possible.

The campground features a long sandy swimming beach on Lake Champlain with shallow, warm water ideal for families. RV sites sit within a short walk of the beach and bathhouse, and day-use parking is available for RV guests.
The adjacent Ausable Marsh Wildlife Management Area is one of the top birding spots in the northern Adirondacks. A flat interpretive trail and viewing areas make it accessible for all ages, with waterfowl, herons, and songbirds common in summer.
A boat launch at the campground provides direct access to Lake Champlain for fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Anglers target bass, pike, and perch in the shallow bays near the Ausable River mouth.
Ausable Chasm, sometimes called the Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks, is about a 15-minute drive north of the campground. The attraction offers rim walks, rafting, and tubing through a deep sandstone gorge, with a large paved parking area suitable for RVs and tow vehicles.
The Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway climbs to near the summit of the fifth-highest peak in New York, about an hour southwest of the campground. Drivers reach a stone castle parking area with views across the High Peaks and Lake Champlain, and oversize vehicles are restricted, so check clearance before towing.
The village of Lake Placid, roughly an hour from the campground, preserves venues from the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Visitors can tour the Olympic Center, ride the bobsled track, and ascend the ski jump tower, with designated RV parking lots near the main Olympic complex.
Point Au Roche State Park, about 20 miles north near Plattsburgh, offers additional Lake Champlain beaches, nature trails, and picnic areas. The park has wide paved roads and ample day-use parking that accommodates larger vehicles.
The Rv worked out perfectly! This was our first experience! The host was helpful and immediately responsive to any questions. Unit was clean, well maintained and well appointed. Thank you Tim. We hope you will rent to us again.

Ausable Point Campground, NY, United States
The campground is just off NY Route 9 in Peru, about 12 miles south of Plattsburgh and roughly 160 miles (about 3 hours) north of Albany via the Adirondack Northway (I-87). Exit 35 off I-87 connects to Bear Swamp Road and Route 9, a short, flat approach with no tunnels, low bridges, or steep grades, making it one of the more RV-friendly Adirondack destinations. From Montreal the drive is about 75 miles south on Autoroute 15 and I-87, and travelers coming from Vermont can cross Lake Champlain on the Grand Isle or Port Kent ferries, though RV length and weight limits apply on the ferries, so check in advance. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent RV trips is Plattsburgh International Airport, with Burlington International in Vermont another option.
