Late June through early September offers the warmest weather, full campground services, and the most active canal boat traffic through the St. Peters lock. July and August bring average highs in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius and the busiest period, so reservations are recommended for weekends. Early June and September are quieter shoulder-season options with cooler nights and fewer bugs, though some services may be reduced. The park and campground are closed in winter.

The St. Peters Canal is an operating 19th-century ship canal linking the Atlantic Ocean to the Bras d'Or Lake, adjacent to the park. Visitors can watch the lock in action, cross the swing bridge, and walk interpretive paths that explain its Mi'kmaq, French, and British history.
A short woodland walk leads from the campground to elevated viewpoints over the canal, the Atlantic approach, and the Bras d'Or Lake. Interpretive signage marks the location of the historic coastal gun battery that gave the park its name.
The park's day-use area on the Bras d'Or side offers a sheltered pebble beach, picnic tables, and swimming in the brackish waters of Canada's inland sea. It is a convenient lunch stop on the Bras d'Or Lake Scenic Drive.
This small community museum in the village of St. Peter's interprets the 17th-century French trading post established by Nicolas Denys and the area's role in early Acadian history. It is a short drive from the park entrance.
The birthplace of renowned Nova Scotia marine photographer Wallace MacAskill has been preserved as a museum in St. Peter's. Exhibits feature his hand-tinted photographs of the Bluenose and Atlantic coastal scenes.
The park sits on the Bras d'Or Lake Scenic Drive, a designated touring route that circles Canada's only inland sea, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. From St. Peter's, RV travellers can loop through Dundee, Iona, and Baddeck with pull-off viewpoints along the way.
Paddlers can launch near the canal to explore the protected waters of the Bras d'Or Lake or coves along the Atlantic side. Local outfitters in St. Peter's rent kayaks and offer guided tours during the summer season.

Battery Provincial Park, NS, Canada
The park is in the village of St. Peter's on Route 4, about 60 km (roughly 45 minutes) southwest of Sydney and about 75 km (about 1 hour) from the Canso Causeway that links Cape Breton to mainland Nova Scotia. From Halifax, drive time is approximately 4 to 4.5 hours via Highway 102 and Highway 104. The route is straightforward for RVs with no tunnels or severe grades, but expect rolling terrain, two-lane sections, and moose warnings on Highway 104 after dark. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Sydney (YQY), with Halifax Stanfield (YHZ) as a larger alternative.
