Best time to visit Battle Ground Lake State Park

Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the best conditions for swimming and paddling on the lake. July and August bring peak crowds and book up quickly on weekends, so midweek stays are easier for RV travelers. May, June, and September are good shoulder-season windows with greener forest, cooler temperatures, and lighter use. Winter visits are possible but wet, with muddy trails and short daylight.

  • Swimming and the Day-Use Beach Easy

The designated swimming area on the lake is a popular summer destination for families. The beach is a short walk from the day-use parking area and offers calm, cool water in a sheltered forested setting.

The lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout and also holds largemouth bass and panfish. Bank fishing is possible from several shoreline points, and small non-motorized boats can be launched from the day-use area.

  • Non-Motorized Boating and Paddling Easy
    RV parking available

Kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards are welcome on Battle Ground Lake, which restricts gas motors to keep the water quiet. The compact size of the lake makes it a good beginner paddling spot.

  • Upland Forest and Equestrian Trails Moderate

Beyond the lakeshore, a network of trails climbs into the surrounding forested ridges above the caldera. Several segments are shared with horses and mountain bikes, providing longer loop options for hikers.

The park's mix of Douglas fir forest, wetlands, and open water attracts songbirds, waterfowl, black-tailed deer, and the occasional river otter. Early morning from the lake loop is a good time to spot wildlife.

  • Day Trip to the Columbia River Gorge Easy

The park's location in southwest Washington makes it a practical base for exploring the Columbia River Gorge and Portland area. Multnomah Falls and the historic Columbia River Highway are within roughly an hour's drive.

Took the trailer out for a long holiday weekend. Torrey and Nick were super nice and helpful. We called with a few questions and they were helpful and got us up and running. Highly recommend!

Torrey and Nick are absolute stars. Their Jayco trailer is as advertised. Clean roomie and all the amenities that a family could want on their adventure. Drop off, pick up and use of the fifth wheel was simple and straightforward. Torrey was responsive with all questions and an absolute delight to work with. Would certainly use her services again.

How to get to Battle Ground Lake State Park

The park sits off NE Heisson Road, about 3 miles east of the town of Battle Ground. From Vancouver, Washington, it is roughly a 25 to 30 minute drive north via I-5 and SR-502, and from Portland, Oregon it is about 45 minutes via I-5 and I-205. The final approach uses narrow rural two-lane roads with a steep, winding entrance drive into the campground that can be tight for long trailers and motorhomes, so slow speeds and careful backing are advised. Portland International Airport (PDX) is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips.
