Best time to visit Beartown State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly May through October, offers the most comfortable conditions for walking the boardwalk and exploring the rock formations. Summer temperatures stay cooler than in the lowlands because the park sits above 3,000 feet on Droop Mountain, and the shaded crevasses often hold chilly air even in July. Fall brings strong leaf color across the surrounding Monongahela National Forest, while the park is typically closed to vehicles during the winter season when snow and ice make the access road and boardwalk unsafe.

Things to do at Beartown State Park

  • Beartown Boardwalk Loop Easy
    RV parking available

The Beartown Boardwalk is a half-mile elevated loop that winds past towering Droop Sandstone cliffs, deep crevasses, and moss-covered overhangs. The raised walkway keeps the terrain accessible to most visitors and protects the fragile rock ecosystem below. It is the park's main attraction and can be completed in under an hour.

  • Rock Formation Photography

Beartown is one of the best spots in West Virginia to photograph dramatic sandstone geology. Filtered light through the hemlocks, mossy boulders, and narrow rock chambers create striking images, especially mid-morning on clear days. Tripods fit easily on the boardwalk without blocking other visitors.

  • Picnicking at the Trailhead

A small picnic area near the parking lot offers tables under mature hardwoods. It is a good midday stop for RV travelers touring the Highland Scenic Byway. Pack in food and water, as there are no concessions in the park.

  • Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park Easy
    RV parking available

Droop Mountain Battlefield is a short drive north of Beartown and preserves the site of one of the largest Civil War battles in West Virginia. The park has an observation tower, museum, picnic shelters, and interpretive trails. RV-friendly parking is available near the main day-use area.

  • Watoga State Park Day Trip
    RV parking available

Watoga State Park is West Virginia's largest state park and sits roughly 30 minutes from Beartown. It offers a full campground with hookups, lake paddling, a swimming pool, and more than 40 miles of trails. Many RV travelers use Watoga as a basecamp for visiting Beartown.

  • Highland Scenic Byway Drive

The Highland Scenic Byway is a 43-mile National Scenic Byway that climbs through the Monongahela National Forest just north of Beartown. The route crosses elevations above 4,500 feet with sweeping overlooks and wildflower bogs. Pullouts accommodate most mid-size RVs, though extreme-length rigs should scout in advance.

  • Cranberry Glades Botanical Area Easy
    RV parking available

Cranberry Glades, along the Highland Scenic Byway, is the largest bog in West Virginia and offers a half-mile boardwalk through a subarctic ecosystem. It pairs naturally with a Beartown visit for travelers interested in unusual landscapes. The visitor center parking lot accommodates RVs and tow vehicles.

Lewisburg, WV is roughly 45 minutes south, Charleston, WV is about 2.5 hours west, and Roanoke, VA is about 2.5 hours southeast. RV drivers should note that the final access road is narrow with tight curves, the parking lot is compact with limited turnaround space, and large Class A motorhomes or long fifth wheels may prefer to park at a nearby state park and day-trip in.
