Best time to visit Big Bay State Park

Mid-June through August offers the warmest Lake Superior swimming conditions, the longest daylight, and full ferry service from Bayfield. September brings cooler nights, fewer crowds, and excellent fall color along the boreal shoreline, making it a strong shoulder-season choice for RVers. Early spring and late fall can be cold and wet, and ice conditions on Lake Superior may disrupt ferry sailings during freeze-up and break-up.

Things to do at Big Bay State Park

  • Big Bay Sand Beach Easy
    RV parking available

Big Bay's mile-and-a-half sand beach is the park's signature attraction, fronting Lake Superior and backed by a forested barrier spit. Visitors swim, sunbathe, and beachcomb along one of the longest natural sand beaches on the Wisconsin Great Lakes coast. Day-use parking is close to the beach access.

  • Bay View Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The Bay View Trail follows the shoreline atop low sandstone cliffs and offers panoramic views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. The path winds through northern hardwood and boreal forest with several lookout points and stairs down to small coves. It is a popular moderate hike of roughly 1.5 miles one way from the picnic area.

  • Lagoon Boardwalk and Point Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The Point Trail and lagoon boardwalk lead from the campground area across a freshwater lagoon protected by a sandbar to the open Lake Superior beach. The flat boardwalk is ideal for families and birdwatchers and connects to longer loop options. Wildlife sightings often include herons, ducks, and turtles.

  • Sea Caves Kayaking Moderate
    RV parking available

The sandstone shoreline at the park's eastern end features small sea caves and arches accessible by kayak in calm conditions. Paddlers launch from the beach to explore the cliffs along Big Bay. Lake Superior conditions can change quickly, so check the forecast and consider a guided trip if inexperienced.

  • Madeline Island Museum, La Pointe Easy
    RV parking available

The Madeline Island Museum in nearby La Pointe interprets the island's Ojibwe heritage, fur-trade history, and lighthouse-era past. It is a short drive from the park and operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society. The town also offers restaurants, shops, and the ferry dock.

  • Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Tours Easy
    RV parking available

From the Bayfield mainland, narrated cruises and water taxis tour the Apostle Islands and their famed sea caves and lighthouses. The park showcases picturesque sea caves, sandy beaches, and the largest collection of lighthouses in the National Park system. Many RVers combine a Big Bay stay with a day trip back to Bayfield for these tours. nps.gov/apis

  • Stargazing at Big Bay Easy
    RV parking available

Madeline Island's distance from mainland light pollution makes Big Bay an excellent dark-sky destination. Clear summer and fall nights bring vivid views of the Milky Way, and aurora borealis sightings are possible during periods of high solar activity. The beach and picnic areas are good open-sky vantage points.
