Late spring through early fall, roughly May through October, is the best window to visit, when access roads are clear of snow and the falls run strong from snowmelt and seasonal rain. Late September and early October bring peak fall foliage across the Northeast Kingdom, a popular draw for RV travelers. Midsummer offers the warmest weather and the easiest driving conditions, while winter access is limited by snow, ice, and slick footing around the gorge.
Winter access limited; icy footing around the gorge
Snow and ice; day-use access only
Mud season; backroads may be soft or posted
High water from snowmelt; falls run strong
Reliable access begins; black flies common
Peak summer travel season
Early foliage begins late in the month
Peak foliage; busy on weekends
Cold rain and early snow possible
Snow and ice; day-use only with caution
The main attraction is the overlook of the Missisquoi River plunging through a steep bedrock gorge. A short, rooty footpath from the pull-off leads to natural viewpoints above the falls, with no guardrails in most spots.
The gorge, cascades, and surrounding hardwood forest make Big Falls a favorite stop for landscape and foliage photography. Morning light and high-water periods after rain produce the most dramatic scenes.
Experienced paddlers access calmer sections of the Missisquoi upstream and downstream of the falls, portaging around the gorge itself. The Upper Missisquoi and Trout Rivers contain the only river miles designated as Wild and Scenic in Vermont. nps.gov/articles/000/upper-missisquoi-and-trout-wild-and-scenic-rivers.htm
The Missisquoi valley is known for its historic covered bridges, an easy add-on drive from Big Falls. Designated values along the river include the highest concentration of covered bridges in any town in the U.S.
Anglers fish the Missisquoi for trout and warmwater species in pools above and below the gorge. A Vermont fishing license is required, and wading near the falls is dangerous due to strong currents and slick rock.
Jay Peak Resort, a short drive southwest of the park, offers an aerial tramway, hiking, and long-range views of the Green Mountains and Quebec. It pairs well with a Big Falls stop for a full day of sightseeing.
The town of Newport on Lake Memphremagog, about 15 miles from the park, has RV-friendly services, restaurants, and a waterfront boardwalk. It is a practical base for groceries, fuel, and dump station access while touring the Northeast Kingdom.

Big Falls of Missisquoi State Park, VT, United States
The park sits off VT Route 105 in North Troy, Vermont, about a 15 minute drive from Newport and roughly 1 hour 45 minutes (about 95 miles) northeast of Burlington. The final approach uses narrow rural roads with a tight gravel pull-off, so large motorhomes and long travel trailers should scout parking carefully and be prepared to turn around on River Road. Mountain grades on Route 242 over Jay Peak are steep and not recommended for big rigs; most RVs should stay on Route 100 or I-91 and approach via Route 105. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Burlington International Airport (BTV).
