Best time to visit Big Run State Park

Late May through early October offers the most reliable weather for RV travel, with warm days, cool mountain nights, and full access to the campground and boat launch. Summer weekends fill quickly, so midweek stays and the shoulder months of May, September, and early October provide cooler temperatures and lighter crowds. Spring brings strong stream flow and excellent trout fishing, while fall delivers vivid hardwood color across the Allegheny ridges. Winter conditions on the narrow mountain access road can be severe, and facilities are typically reduced or closed from late fall through early spring.

Things to do at Big Run State Park

  • Paddle the Savage River Reservoir Easy
    RV parking available

Flatwater paddling on the Savage River Reservoir is the signature activity at Big Run. Launching is straightforward from the park shoreline, and the protected valley keeps wind and waves manageable for canoes and kayaks. The long, narrow reservoir offers several miles of exploration between forested ridges. dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/bigrun.aspx

  • Hike in Savage River State Forest Strenuous

Big Run serves as a trailhead for extensive hiking routes into the surrounding Savage River State Forest, Maryland's largest state forest. Trails climb from the reservoir to ridge-top viewpoints through hardwood forest, with opportunities for day hikes and multi-day backpacking using permits from the forest office. Expect rugged terrain, stream crossings, and significant elevation gain. dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/savageriver.aspx

  • Meadow Mountain Trail Ascent Strenuous

A demanding hike climbs from the reservoir into the Savage River State Forest ridges along the Meadow Mountain Trail. Beginning near the western end of the Savage River Reservoir, the route ascends roughly 1,900 feet with numerous creek crossings and ends at a viewpoint above State Route 495. Bring plenty of water and expect a full-day effort for the round trip.

  • Trout Fishing on Big Run and the Savage River Easy
    RV parking available

Big Run and the tailwaters below the Savage River Dam are well known cold-water trout fisheries. Anglers target brook, brown, and rainbow trout from the streambanks and reservoir shoreline, with spring and early summer offering the most productive flows. A Maryland fishing license and trout stamp are required.

  • Primitive Stream-side Camping
    RV parking available

The park's campsites are scattered along Big Run and the reservoir, offering a quiet, rustic overnight base. Sites are basic with vault toilets and no hookups, so self-contained rigs should arrive with full fresh water and empty holding tanks. The remote setting and minimal light pollution make for excellent stargazing on clear nights.

  • Scenic Drive Through Savage River State Forest
    RV parking available

The drive in and out of Big Run along New Germany Road and Savage River Road is a scenic experience in its own right, winding through deep hardwood forest and past the Savage River Dam. Pull-offs along the reservoir give paddlers and anglers quick water access, and the road links nearby New Germany State Park for day trips. Drive slowly and watch for wildlife on the pavement.

  • Wildlife and Bird Watching Easy
    RV parking available

The surrounding Savage River State Forest hosts black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and a wide range of songbirds and raptors. Quiet mornings along the shoreline and trail corridors offer the best viewing. Visitors should store food securely and follow posted bear-country precautions.

How to get to Big Run State Park

The park is reached via a winding mountain road off New Germany Road and Savage River Road, roughly 20 miles southeast of Grantsville and about 35 miles east of Morgantown, West Virginia. From Interstate 68 at Exit 24 (Finzel) or Exit 22 (Grantsville), drivers descend steep, curvy secondary roads into the Savage River valley, so larger RVs should plan for slow speeds, tight turns, and steep grades. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Pittsburgh International Airport, about a 2.5 hour drive, with Morgantown and Cumberland regional airports also within reach. There are no tunnels on the approach, but trailers and motorhomes should avoid shortcuts onto unpaved forest roads, and low-clearance rigs should watch for rough pavement on the final miles into the campground.
