Late May through September is the prime window, with mild rim temperatures, open roads, and full campground services. July and August bring warm days and the biggest crowds, so late May, early June, and September are strong shoulder options for RV travel. Water at Black Canyon is trucked to the park during the summertime and no water is available October to April on either the North or South Rim, so visitors must bring water. The North Rim Road typically closes to vehicles around November 15 or at first major snowfall, and the East Portal Road usually closes mid-November.

The South Rim Road is a paved scenic drive along the canyon edge with pullouts at major overlooks. The 6-mile South Rim Road connects the visitor center to overlooks along the rim. It is the main auto-tour route and the easiest way to see the canyon from an RV. nps.gov/blca/planyourvisit/drives.htm
Painted Wall Overlook features the tallest cliff in Colorado. From river to rim, the Painted Wall is 2,250 feet tall, and the walk to the overlook is 200 yards on an unpaved trail. The pullout along South Rim Road has space for standard vehicles. nps.gov/places/overlook_paintedwall.htm
Rim Rock Trail is a rim-edge walk linking the South Rim Visitor Center and campground. The trail meanders along the canyon rim, connecting the South Rim Visitor Center to the South Rim Campground, with views of canyon walls, the Gunnison River, and the West Elk Mountains, and Tomichi Point offers a resting spot about halfway. The one-way distance is 1 mile and the difficulty is moderately strenuous. nps.gov/thingstodo/hike-the-rim-rock-trail.htm
Gunnison Point is the centerpiece overlook beside the South Rim Visitor Center. The South Rim Visitor Center is at Gunnison Point, a short walk leads to the overlooks, and from here the Rim Rock Trail heads to the South Rim Campground while the Oak Flat Trail loops below the canyon rim. The parking area is the natural starting point for a rim day. nps.gov/places/overlook_gunnisonpoint.htm
Oak Flat Loop is the only South Rim trail that dips below the canyon edge. It descends through oak and fir to a bench with partial canyon views before climbing back to the rim. The trailhead is at the visitor center with RV-friendly parking. nps.gov/blca/planyourvisit/hikingtrails.htm
Warner Point Nature Trail ends at the deepest viewpoint of the canyon. At its deepest, the canyon is 2,722 ft (830 m) deep at Warner Point. The trail starts at High Point at the end of South Rim Road, where there is a vehicle pullout. nps.gov/blca/planyourvisit/hikingtrails.htm
Black Canyon is a destination for experienced traditional climbers. The park offers vast opportunities to expert rock climbers in an extremely deep and narrow canyon, with the majority of climbing activity around North and South Chasm Walls where the canyon is 1,820 ft deep. A wilderness use permit is required. home.nps.gov/blca/planyourvisit/rockclimbing.htm
The North Rim offers quieter, more dramatic views straight down into the canyon. The 13-site North Rim Campground is first-come, first-served and limited to vehicles less than 22 feet long. The access road is gravel and best suited to smaller RVs or tow vehicles left at camp. nps.gov/blca/planyourvisit/northrim.htm

I'm so happy I rented Dan's RV. It is so well kept with all the accessories you can think of. Dan responded to questions quickly, delivered, and picked up right on time. I would definitely rent again if I'm in Paonia!

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, CO, United States
The South Rim entrance is about 15 miles east of Montrose, Colorado, via US-50 and CO-347, roughly a 5 to 6 hour drive from Denver and about 3 hours from Grand Junction. Montrose Regional Airport is the closest option for fly-and-rent RV trips, with Grand Junction Regional Airport a larger alternative. East Portal Road leading into the depths of Black Canyon is extremely steep and winding, and vehicles longer than 22 feet, including trailers, are prohibited on East Portal Road due to the 16% grade and hairpin curves. The North Rim is reached by a long gravel approach from Crawford and is not recommended for large motorhomes or towables.
