Late May through early October is the prime window, when the campground is open, the swim pond is staffed, and foliage trails are in full leaf. July and August bring the warmest weather and peak campground demand, so midweek stays are easier to secure. September and early October are excellent for RV travel, with cool nights, fewer bugs, and vivid fall color across the Litchfield Hills. Spring shoulder season can be muddy on trails but quieter at campsites.

Black Rock Pond is a spring-fed swimming area with a sandy beach at the center of the park. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season, and picnic tables line the shore for day use.
The blue-blazed Mattatuck Trail is a long-distance route that passes directly through the park, climbing rocky ridges with views of the Naugatuck Valley. Day hikers can sample several scenic miles from the park trailhead before turning back.
A short but rocky climb leads from the pond area to ledges with open views of the surrounding hills. It is a popular short hike for campers looking for a half-day outing.
Black Rock Pond and Branch Brook offer warm-water and stocked trout fishing in season. A Connecticut fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.
The park maintains picnic tables, grills, and shaded lawns near the pond. Restrooms and drinking water are available during the warm-weather season.
Interpretive points within the park reference the small graphite mining operations that gave Black Rock its name. Visitors can read about the park's industrial history while exploring the surrounding woods.
The park's wooded campground offers rustic sites in a forested setting near the pond. Amenities include restrooms with showers, and reservations can be made through the Connecticut State Parks system.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

Black Rock State Park, CT, United States
The park entrance is on U.S. Route 6 between Watertown and Thomaston, about 15 minutes northwest of Waterbury and roughly 45 minutes (about 35 miles) from Hartford via I-84. From New York City it is about 2 hours (95 miles) via I-684 and I-84. RV drivers should note that Route 6 through the Litchfield Hills is a winding, two-lane state highway with rolling grades, so allow extra time and watch for low-hanging branches at pull-offs. Bradley International Airport near Hartford is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips, about an hour away.
