Best time to visit Blow Me Down Provincial Park

Mid-June through early September is the best window, when Route 450 is clear of snow, daytime highs are comfortable, and coastal fog tends to lift by afternoon. July and August offer the warmest weather and the best chance for whale and seabird sightings in the Bay of Islands, though they also bring the most visitors. Late June and early September are good shoulder options for RV travellers who want quieter lookouts and cooler hiking conditions. Winter visits are not practical, as the park is closed and the coastal road can be hazardous.

  • Whale and Seabird Watching Easy
    RV parking available

From late June through August, the Bay of Islands is a productive area for spotting minke and humpback whales, along with gannets, gulls, and other seabirds. Bring binoculars and scan the water from the park's elevated lookouts.

  • Captain Cook Trail Scenic Drive (Route 450) Easy
    RV parking available

The drive to and from the park along Route 450 is a destination in its own right, winding past fishing communities, coves, and cliffs on the south shore of the Bay of Islands. Allow extra time, as the narrow road and frequent pullouts invite slow travel.

  • Blow Me Down Mountains Viewing and Photography Easy
    RV parking available

The park sits at the foot of the Blow Me Down Mountains, part of the Bay of Islands ophiolite where ancient ocean crust is exposed at the surface. The dramatic reddish-brown peridotite peaks make striking photos against the blue water of the bay.

  • Lark Harbour Village Stop Easy
    RV parking available

Just outside the park, the fishing village of Lark Harbour offers a working waterfront, small shops, and local seafood. It is an easy add-on for RV travellers spending a day on the Captain Cook Trail.

We rented Kyle’s van for an 8 day road trip around Newfoundland. We couldn’t be happier with the van and had an amazing experience with Kyle - he is responsive, personable, and very helpful. The van itself was exactly as advertised and the bed was very comfortable. Everything worked great. Couldn’t recommend this more!!

Took this van for a weekend. Gotta say it was comfy, and cozy. There was more than enough space to put things. I was Supprised with how good the fan worked at nite, it actually got to cold at one point. Kyle the owner is easy to deal with. He’s very nice and helpful guy who replies fast and very easy to get ahold of if need be. I had an exceptionally good weekend and I’m sure the next person to take this van will 1000% enjoy there’s to.

How to get to Blow Me Down Provincial Park

The park lies at the far west end of Route 450 (the Captain Cook Trail) on the south shore of the Bay of Islands. From Corner Brook it is roughly 50 km, about a one hour drive, and from Deer Lake it is approximately 100 km, about 90 minutes. Route 450 is paved but narrow and winding with several tight curves and short steep grades as it hugs the coastline, so larger motorhomes and trailers should drive cautiously and watch for blind corners. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips is Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF), which offers the most convenient RV pickup options for western Newfoundland.
