Best time to visit Blue Rock State Park

Late May through early October offers the most reliable weather for RV camping, with warm days, open swim beach, and full campground operations. September and early October bring cooler nights, lower humidity, and vivid fall color across the surrounding hardwood forest, making shoulder season a favorite for RVers. Spring can be wet and muddy on unpaved trails, while winter camping is limited and many amenities are shut down.

Things to do at Blue Rock State Park

  • Fishing on Cutler Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Cutler Lake is the centerpiece of the park, a small electric-motors-only lake stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. Shore anglers will find easy access from multiple points along the campground and picnic areas. A small boat ramp accommodates kayaks, canoes, and trolling-motor fishing boats.

  • Cutler Lake Beach and Swimming Easy

A small sand swim beach on Cutler Lake is open without a lifeguard during the warm season. It is a quiet, family-friendly spot steps from the campground loop. Day-use parking accommodates tow vehicles but is not designed for long rigs.

  • Hiking the Park Trails Moderate
    RV parking available

The park maintains several miles of short hiking trails winding through mixed hardwood forest and ridgelines above Cutler Lake. Trails are generally easy to moderate and ideal for a morning or afternoon walk from camp. Loop options connect to longer backcountry routes in the adjoining state forest.

  • Paddling Cutler Lake Easy
    RV parking available

The electric-motors-only rule keeps the lake calm, making it a pleasant paddle for kayaks, canoes, and SUPs. Launch from the park ramp and explore quiet coves lined with hardwoods. Rentals are limited, so bringing your own craft is recommended.

  • Blue Rock State Forest Backroads Moderate

The adjoining Blue Rock State Forest offers unpaved forest roads and trails popular with hikers and horseback riders. It more than quadruples the trail mileage available beyond the state park boundary. Parking pull-offs can handle tow vehicles but are not RV-friendly for very long rigs.

  • Wildlife Watching and Birding Easy
    RV parking available

The forested ridges and quiet lakeshore support whitetail deer, wild turkey, pileated woodpeckers, herons, and migratory songbirds. Early morning and dusk at the lake edge are especially productive. Bring binoculars and a compact field guide for best results.

  • Day Trip to Dillon State Park Easy
    RV parking available

Dillon State Park, about 30 miles north, offers a much larger reservoir with boating, additional hiking, and a marina. It pairs well with a multi-night stay at Blue Rock. The drive is easy for tow vehicles and day trips by car.

The RV met our needs perfectly. Very clean. The Queen mattress was really comfortable, too. Tom was available for any questions and concerns throughout the weekend. We will definitely look him up again.

The host was very responsive and the camper was just what my wife and I were looking for. Everything was included and all we needed was food and cloths. The coffee service was appreciated too! Will rent from again.

How to get to Blue Rock State Park

The park sits roughly 15 miles southeast of Zanesville via State Route 60 and Cutler Lake Road, about a 25 to 30 minute drive. From Columbus, expect a drive of about 75 miles, or roughly 90 minutes east on I-70 before heading south. Access roads into the park are narrow, winding, and hilly with some steep grades, so larger Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels should drive slowly and watch for tight turns. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH).
