Best time to visit Bradbury Mountain State Park

Late May through early October offers the most reliable weather for RV travel, with warm days, open campgrounds, and dry trails. Spring, especially mid-March through mid-May, is prime hawk-watching season at the summit, though nights can still be cold. Early fall brings crisp air, thinner crowds, and strong foliage color in late September and October. Peak summer weekends book up fast, so midweek stays are easier for larger rigs.

Things to do at Bradbury Mountain State Park

  • Summit Trail to Bradbury Mountain Easy
    RV parking available

The Summit Trail is a short, steep path of roughly a quarter mile that climbs directly from the day-use parking area to the 485-foot summit. Open ledges at the top provide long views south toward Casco Bay and Portland. A good option for RVers with limited time.

  • Northern Loop Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The Northern Loop is a moderate multi-mile circuit through hardwood forest, wetlands, and quiet woods on the north side of the park. It links with several side trails for longer outings and is popular with hikers and trail runners. Trailheads are reached from the main day-use lot.

  • Spring Hawk Watch at the Summit Easy
    RV parking available

Each spring, volunteers run a daily hawk count from the Bradbury summit, making it one of the best raptor-watching sites in the Northeast. Visitors are welcome to join and spot eagles, hawks, falcons, and osprey on clear days. Bring binoculars and warm layers.

  • Mountain Biking the Multi-Use Trails Moderate
    RV parking available

Bradbury is known across southern Maine for its singletrack mountain biking network, which connects to the adjacent Bradbury to Pineland Corridor. Routes range from mellow flow to technical rocky lines. Riders stage from the day-use parking area.

  • Horseback Riding and Equestrian Trails Easy
    RV parking available

Several park trails are open to horseback riders and include wider, lower-grade tread suited to equestrian use. Trailer parking is available near the main entrance. Riders should check current trail designations at the gatehouse.

  • Picnicking and Playground Area Easy
    RV parking available

The day-use area includes shaded picnic tables, grills, a playground, and an open ball field close to the campground. It is a low-key spot for families to relax between hikes. Restrooms are nearby.

  • Winter Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing Moderate
    RV parking available

When the campground is closed, the park remains open for day-use winter recreation on its trail network. Snowshoers and cross-country skiers use the gentler loops, while the Summit Trail can be icy and demands traction devices. Parking is plowed at the main lot.

Easy experience! Josh was so great and helped my little family have an awesome time on our camping trip. The camper was already delivered and set up before we got there, and it was super clean! Communicating with Josh was great. He responded within minutes anytime I had a question. We can’t thank him enough for making our experience seamless. We look forward to booking with him again! 😊

Overall I enjoyed renting out this van. It offered a comfortable north-south bed orientation for two people, plenty of bed room. The heating system worked well and the van conversion was great too.

We had a great experience with Jeff's van. When he says that you can venture into places other campers and vans can only dream of he isn't kidding. We used the van for a video production project in the North Maine Woods and traveled down logging roads and offshoots with no problem. There was plenty of power, USB and outlets for us to charge batteries, phones and watches which was critical. Pickup was a breeze. The van is very well equipped and stocked. I can tell you from personal experience that the mattress for the lower sleeping area is surprisingly comfortable. We didn't want for anything during our stay!

How to get to Bradbury Mountain State Park

The park is about 20 miles north of Portland, a 25 to 30 minute drive via Interstate 295 and Exit 22 in Freeport, then north on Route 9 to Pownal. From Augusta it is roughly 50 miles and just over an hour south on I-295. Routes are RV friendly with no tunnels or major mountain passes, but the final approach on Route 9 is a two-lane country road with tight shoulders and a small park entrance, so slow down on the last mile. Portland International Jetport is the nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips.
