Things to do at Brighton Recreational Area

  • Bishop Lake Beach and Day-Use Area Easy
    RV parking available

Bishop Lake Beach is the park's main sandy swim beach, with a seasonal swim area, shaded picnic grounds, and a boat launch. A large paved parking lot and restrooms make it easy to access with a tow vehicle while your RV stays at camp. It is a simple, family-friendly stop for an afternoon on the water.

  • Penosha Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

Penosha Trail is a roughly 5 mile loop hike through oak and hickory forest, wetlands, and rolling moraine hills. Well-marked and moderately hilly, it showcases the classic glacial landscape of southeast Michigan. The trailhead at Bishop Lake offers ample parking suitable for tow vehicles.

  • Kahchin Trail Easy

Kahchin Trail is a shorter 2 mile loop branching from the Penosha network, ideal for a quick morning walk from camp. It travels through mixed forest and passes several small ponds where wildlife is common. The route is well-signed and suitable for most hikers.

  • Murray Lake Mountain Bike Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The Murray Lake mountain bike trail is a roughly 5 mile singletrack loop designed for intermediate riders. Fast, flowing sections mix with short climbs and twisty wooded turns. A dedicated trailhead parking lot accommodates vehicles and trailers.

  • Appleton Lake Paddling and Rustic Sites Easy
    RV parking available

Appleton Lake offers a quiet no-wake lake for paddling, shore fishing, and access to rustic tent sites. RV travelers can park at the day-use lot and launch kayaks or canoes for a calm afternoon. It is one of the most peaceful corners of the park.

  • Equestrian and Multi-Use Trails Moderate
    RV parking available

Brighton Recreational Area maintains a dedicated bridle trail system radiating from the equestrian staging area. Riders find wide two-track routes through forest and open meadows, and the staging lot has space for horse trailers. Hikers are welcome on most equestrian loops as well.

  • Fishing on Bishop, Chilson, and Appleton Lakes Easy
    RV parking available

The park's lakes are managed for bass, bluegill, crappie, and northern pike. Bishop Lake has an improved boat launch that can handle small trailered boats and is within walking distance of the modern campground. A valid Michigan fishing license is required.

My wife and I had a fantastic first-time RV rental from Vanessa. We attended a 3-day music festival and our accommodations were everything we had hoped for. Right from the start we were able to totally enjoy our trip. Vanessa's associate did a fantastic job orienting us to the RV and covered everything that we needed to know; nothing was missed. We were able to level the RV and set it up for three days of fun with no problem at all. Vanessa thought of everything that we would need to be self sufficient; from garbage bags to paper towels, dishes, silverware, pots and pans, salt and pepper, dish soap, hangers, fly swatter, etc., etc. We had EVERYTHING we needed, all we had to pack was our clothes and food. We had no issues with the RV at all. We couldn't have asked for a better RV rental experience than we had with Vanessa. When we rent again, it will be through Vanessa for sure!!! Thank you Vanessa!!!

Vanessa was a great communicator throughout the entire experience. Since we are former travel trailer owners we didn’t require a detailed and comprehensive walkthrough but Vanessa did a great job sharing the critical details of her unit. Pickup and dropoff schedule was very accommodating. Our family had a great time and enjoyed the use of the motor home!

How to get to Brighton Recreational Area

The park is reached from I-96 at exits near the city of Brighton, roughly a 50 minute drive (about 45 miles) from downtown Detroit and around 1 hour 15 minutes (60 miles) from Lansing. Ann Arbor sits about 25 miles south via US-23, making the park an easy detour for travelers coming from Ohio. Approach roads are paved two-lane county routes with some narrow, winding stretches and a few low hills, so RV drivers should take the final miles slowly.
