Best time to visit Button Bay State Park

Late June through August is the most reliable window, with warm days ideal for swimming, paddling, and lakeshore camping. Early September brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong fall foliage as the season progresses. May and early June are quieter shoulder weeks, but expect cool lake temperatures, black flies, and the chance of muddy sites after spring rain.

Things to do at Button Bay State Park

  • Button Point Natural Area hike Easy
    RV parking available

A short, easy walking trail leads from the campground to Button Point, a rocky headland jutting into Lake Champlain. The route passes cedar woods and open meadows with views of the Adirondacks and is the best spot in the park to see fossil-rich Ordovician limestone.

  • Swimming at the park pool Easy
    RV parking available

Button Bay offers a supervised outdoor swimming pool overlooking Lake Champlain rather than a sandy lake beach. It is the safest option for families since the bay itself is shallow, weedy, and has muddy access.

  • Paddling Button Bay and Lake Champlain Moderate
    RV parking available

Kayakers and canoeists can launch from the park to explore the sheltered bay and adjacent Otter Creek mouth. Calm morning water is best for paddlers who want to hug the shoreline and watch for herons and bald eagles.

  • Nature center and fossil exhibits Easy
    RV parking available

A small seasonal nature center near the campground interprets the geology, concretions, and fossils that give Button Bay its name. Ranger-led walks and family programs run during the summer operating season.

  • Fishing Lake Champlain Easy
    RV parking available

Anglers can cast from shore or launch a boat to target smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, and panfish in the bay. A current Vermont fishing license is required for anyone 15 and older.

  • Lake Champlain Maritime Museum visit Easy
    RV parking available

The museum sits just down the road at Basin Harbor and covers the lake's shipwrecks, steamboats, and Revolutionary War history. It is an easy day trip from the park with paved parking suitable for RV tow vehicles.

  • Birdwatching along the shoreline Easy
    RV parking available

The bay's mix of open water, marsh, and farmland attracts waterfowl, ospreys, eagles, and migrating songbirds. Button Point and the campground bluff are reliable vantage points, especially at dawn.

How to get to Button Bay State Park

The park is about 14 miles west of Middlebury and roughly 35 miles (about 45 minutes) south of Burlington via US Route 7 and local roads through Vergennes and Ferrisburgh. The final approach follows narrow rural roads; large RVs should stick to Route 7 as long as possible, watch for low-clearance rail bridges in the area, and take the posted park access route rather than shortcuts. Burlington International Airport (BTV) is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
