Cape Disappointment State Park, WA, United States
The park sits on the Long Beach Peninsula about 2.5 hours (roughly 115 miles) northwest of Portland, Oregon, and about 3 hours (150 miles) southwest of Olympia, Washington. It is located in Pacific County, about 2 miles southwest of Ilwaco, accessible via U.S. 101. RV drivers should note that U.S. 101 includes winding coastal sections and the Astoria-Megler Bridge over the Columbia River, which has steep grades, narrow lanes, and strong crosswinds that can feel tight in wide rigs. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Portland International Airport (PDX).
Late June through early September brings the driest weather, warm coastal temperatures, and the most reliable conditions for beach days, lighthouse tours, and hiking. Shoulder months like May, early June, and September offer lighter crowds and easier RV campsite availability, though ocean fog and cool mornings are common. During winter and early spring, gray whale migration peaks off the headlands, making January through March a rewarding off-season visit if RVers are prepared for heavy rain and wind. The park is open for camping year-round.

The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center is a clifftop museum 200 feet above the Pacific that tells the story of the Corps of Discovery's journey to the ocean. The center features a short film, a gift shop, and a glassed-in observation deck with views of the river, headlands, and ocean. RV parking is available at the visitor lot. nps.gov/places/cape-disappointment-state-park-lewis-and-clark-interpretive-center.htm
Cape Disappointment Lighthouse is a short uphill hike from the interpretive center to the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast. The lighthouses help protect mariners from the rough and ever-changing Columbia River Bar in the treacherous area known as the Graveyard of the Pacific. The trail includes some grades and stairs. nps.gov/places/cape-disappointment-state-park-lewis-and-clark-interpretive-center.htm
North Head Lighthouse sits on a windswept headland with sweeping views up the Long Beach Peninsula. Seasonal guided tours are offered for a small fee, and the short walk from the parking area is family-friendly. Dedicated vehicle parking is available near the trailhead. parks.state.wa.us/187/Cape-Disappointment
Benson Beach is a long Pacific-facing sand beach inside the park, ideal for walking, kite-flying, and storm-watching. The beach is a popular clam-digging destination, and anglers often set up on the nearby North Jetty to fish for salmon. Parking near the beach access accommodates larger vehicles. nps.gov/places/cape-disappointment-wa.htm
Waikiki Beach is a small, sheltered cove near the interpretive center that is one of the few swimmable beaches on this stretch of coast. A short paved path leads from the parking area to the sand, and picnic tables sit just above the beach. The amphitheater lot has room for RVs. parks.state.wa.us/187/Cape-Disappointment
Fort Canby's remaining bunkers and coastal defense batteries are scattered near the interpretive center and open to self-guided exploration. Cape Disappointment was armed with smoothbore cannons during the Civil War, and in 1875 the area was expanded to become Fort Canby, which remained in use through the end of World War II. nps.gov/places/cape-disappointment-state-park-lewis-and-clark-interpretive-center.htm
The park offers about 8 miles of connected trails through old-growth coastal forest, past freshwater lakes, and around saltwater marshes. Trails contain numerous hills with grades ranging from mild to steep, paths can be as narrow as 2 to 3 feet, and surfaces vary from cement to dirt and gravel. nps.gov/thingstodo/l-c-interpretation-center.htm
Baker Bay provides a sheltered boat launch for paddling, fishing, and small-boat access to the Columbia River estuary. The ramp is convenient for crabbing trips and access to the lower Columbia. Trailer and RV parking is provided at the ramp. nps.gov/places/cape-disappointment-wa.htm
