Late June through early October is the prime window, offering warm days, dry granite ledges on the summit, and peak foliage color in late September and early October. July and August bring the busiest trailhead parking, so early arrivals are recommended on weekends. May and early June are quieter but trails can be muddy at higher elevations. Winter access is possible for experienced hikers, but the access road and trailhead facilities are not maintained for RV use once snow arrives.

The West Ridge Trail is the shortest and most popular route to the 3,121-foot summit of Mount Cardigan, about 1.5 miles one way from the state park trailhead. The trail climbs steadily through forest before emerging onto broad open granite ledges at the top, where a historic fire tower offers panoramic views.
The fire tower at the summit is open to visitors and gives 360-degree views of the White Mountains, Green Mountains, and Newfound Lake region. It is reached via any of the summit trails and is a highlight of the park.
The South Ridge and Rimrock trails form a scenic loop combining Cardigan's main summit with South Peak. Hikers gain exposed ledge walking with wide views and return via the West Ridge Trail to the main parking area.
A shorter out-and-back along the lower portion of the Holt Trail gives a taste of the park's forest and brook scenery without committing to the steep upper sections. It is a good choice for families or rest days between bigger hikes.
The state park trailhead includes a picnic area with tables near the parking lot and vault toilets. It is a convenient base for lunch before or after a hike, with shaded spots under tall hardwoods.
The surrounding area is known for vivid fall foliage from late September into early October, and the drive to the trailhead along Cardigan Mountain Road passes through classic New England hardwood forest. Summit views during foliage season stretch for tens of miles in every direction.
The mixed forests around the park support deer, black bear, moose, and a range of songbirds and raptors. Quieter weekday mornings near the trailhead offer the best chances for sightings.

Cardigan Mountain State Park, NH, United States
The trailhead sits at the end of Cardigan Mountain Road in Orange, New Hampshire, roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive from Interstate 93 at exit 23 (New Hampton) via Bristol and Alexandria, or about 45 minutes from Lebanon and the Hanover area. RV drivers should note that the final miles of Cardigan Mountain Road are narrow, rural, and gravel in sections with tight turns and limited shoulders, making the approach challenging for large Class A motorhomes and long fifth-wheels; shorter rigs and Class B/C vans are better suited. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT), about a two-hour drive to the south. There are no mountain passes or tunnels on the route, but expect steep grades on local roads close to the park.
