Late spring through early fall is the best window for RV travel to Cass, with train operations typically running from late May into early fall and peak foliage color arriving in October. Summer brings warm days, cool mountain nights, and the fullest excursion schedule, while autumn rewards visitors with crowds thinning after Labor Day and vivid leaf color on the Bald Knob runs. Shoulder months like May and late October can be chilly at elevation, so RVers should expect frost and limited services. Winter is quiet, with snow common in the higher elevations and most train operations suspended.

The Bald Knob excursion is Cass's signature experience, a long steam-powered climb up switchbacks to one of the highest summits in West Virginia. Vintage Shay geared locomotives pull open and covered cars past mountain meadows and spruce forest. Riders should dress warmly, as the summit is much cooler than the town.
Whittaker Station is a shorter round-trip option that is ideal for families and first-time riders. The stop recreates a 1940s logging camp with interpretive exhibits and a picnic area. Trains run more frequently than the full Bald Knob route.
The restored company town is a walkable outdoor museum of early 20th century logging life. Visitors can browse the two-story company store, tour the railroad history museum, and view original workers' houses now used as cottages. Sidewalks and gentle grades make the district easy to explore.
The Greenbrier River Trail is a 78 mile rail-trail that passes through Cass and follows the river south toward Marlinton and Lewisburg. The flat, crushed-stone surface is popular for walking, biking, and trout fishing along the riverbanks. RVers can access the trail directly from the park.
The Green Bank Observatory is a short drive north of Cass and home to the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope. Guided bus tours and an interactive science center make it a popular rainy-day stop. The site lies inside the National Radio Quiet Zone, so cell and Wi-Fi use is restricted.
The Highland Scenic Highway is a National Scenic Byway that crosses the Monongahela National Forest west of Cass. The route climbs above 4,500 feet with overlooks of the Allegheny highlands and access to trailheads and picnic areas. Steep grades and winding curves require careful RV driving.
Seneca State Forest is the oldest state forest in West Virginia and lies just south of Cass along WV Route 28. Trails range from easy lake loops to longer backcountry routes, and the forest connects to the Greenbrier River Trail. It is a quieter alternative to the busier national forest areas.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, WV, United States
Cass sits on WV Route 66 in east-central West Virginia, roughly a 45 minute drive from Elkins, about 90 minutes from Lewisburg, and around 3.5 hours from both Charleston, WV and Roanoke, VA. The approach from any direction involves winding two-lane mountain roads with steep grades and tight curves, so RV drivers should plan extra time, use low gears on descents, and avoid shortcut routes over unpaved forest roads. There are no long tunnels on the main approaches, but cell service is limited and fuel stops are sparse once you leave larger towns like Elkins or Marlinton. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Yeager Airport in Charleston, WV and Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport in Virginia.
