Best time to visit Cedar Dunes Provincial Park

Late June through August is the prime window, when the campground is open, the lighthouse and inn are operating, and Northumberland Strait water temperatures are among the warmest north of the Carolinas. July and early August bring the busiest beach days and warmest evenings, so reservations are recommended. Early September is an excellent shoulder-season choice for RV travellers, with cooler nights, fewer crowds, and calm driving on Route 14.

Things to do at Cedar Dunes Provincial Park

  • West Point Lighthouse Easy
    RV parking available

The West Point Lighthouse stands at the entrance to the park and is one of the tallest lighthouses on Prince Edward Island. Visitors can tour the interior, climb to the top for views over the Northumberland Strait, and learn about the site's keeper history. RV parking is available in the adjacent day-use lot.

  • Cedar Dunes Beach Easy
    RV parking available

Cedar Dunes Beach is a long stretch of soft red sand fronting the park, with supervised swimming during peak season. The warm, shallow waters of the Northumberland Strait make it one of the better family swimming beaches on western PEI. Walk-on access is just steps from the campground.

  • Boardwalk and Dune Trail Easy
    RV parking available

A short boardwalk and trail system winds through the grassy dunes behind the beach. The route is flat and family friendly, offering views of the shoreline, lighthouse, and coastal vegetation. Interpretive signage explains local ecology.

  • Cycling Route 14 (Lady Slipper Drive) Easy
    RV parking available

Route 14 along the western shore is part of PEI's Lady Slipper Drive scenic loop and is popular with cyclists. Quiet traffic, flat terrain, and ocean views make it ideal for casual riders starting from the campground. Bring your own bikes or rent nearby.

  • Confederation Trail (Tignish and O'Leary sections) Easy
    RV parking available

The Confederation Trail is a tip-to-tip rail-trail system that crosses Prince Edward Island. Nearby trailheads at O'Leary and Tignish offer flat, groomed surfaces for walking and cycling through farmland and woods. Parking lots at both ends typically accommodate smaller RVs.

  • Canadian Potato Museum, O'Leary Easy
    RV parking available

The Canadian Potato Museum in O'Leary is a quirky rainy-day stop about 25 minutes from the park. Exhibits cover the history of potato farming on PEI, a major part of the island's identity and economy. A large gravel parking area accommodates RVs.

  • North Cape and Wind Interpretive Centre Easy
    RV parking available

North Cape sits at the northwestern tip of PEI and features one of the longest natural rock reefs in North America, exposed at low tide. The wind interpretive centre, walking trails, and dramatic cliff views make it a worthwhile day trip from Cedar Dunes. Large parking lot suits RVs.

All previous five star reviews are accurate! Kyle and Connie are lovely people who take the time to ensure you know how to operate all aspects of Sgt Meep. We are total newbies with lots of questions and Kyle patiently answered every one. The RV had absolutely everything we could need, including a spotless, well maintained interior. We are considering a future purchase and they took their time to answer so many additional questions that were totally unrelated to the rental. Good people with a fabulous RV. Thanks for sharing Sgt. Meep with us. Heather & Dave

We truly enjoyed renting Vincent's RV for six nights. It was equipped well beyond our needs. They (Vincent and his lovely wife) thought of everything. We highly recommend their RV for couples, families or individuals who want to experience the beauty of our country in a relaxing nature. Also, for those concerned with never operating an RV... don't worry. The RV is very easy to drive and Vincent does an excellent job explaining how to operate the RV. If you have a question, he is only a friendly call away. We plan to rent the RV again.

How to get to Cedar Dunes Provincial Park

Cedar Dunes is located at West Point on Route 14, roughly a 2 hour drive (about 170 km) west of Charlottetown and about 1 hour (about 75 km) southwest of Summerside. RVers entering PEI via the Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick should note the bridge's wind restrictions for high-sided vehicles and the toll collected on departure; those arriving by the Wood Islands ferry from Nova Scotia face a longer cross-island drive. Roads on western PEI are flat with no mountain passes or tunnels, but rural routes are narrow in places, so watch for soft shoulders. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travellers is Charlottetown Airport (YYG), with Moncton (YQM) in New Brunswick as an alternative.
