Chan Lake Territorial Park, NT, Canada
Chan Lake is on NWT Highway 3 between Fort Providence (roughly 160 km to the southwest) and Behchokǫ̀/Yellowknife (roughly 130 to 190 km to the northeast). Most RVers arrive after crossing the Deh Cho Bridge over the Mackenzie River and driving north; the nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips is Yellowknife (YZF). RV-specific cautions: Highway 3 has long fuel gaps, frost heaves, loose gravel shoulders, and active wood bison on the road, so reduce speed and plan fuel stops in Fort Providence and Behchokǫ̀. There are no tunnels or steep mountain passes on the route.
Late June through August is the best window, when Highway 3 is snow-free, daylight stretches close to 20 hours, and temperatures sit in a comfortable range for outdoor breaks. Early September offers cool air, fewer bugs, and the chance to see fall colours in the boreal forest. Avoid late fall through spring, when snow, ice, freezing temperatures, and limited daylight make the drive challenging and wayside facilities are unmaintained.

Chan Lake's day-use area offers picnic tables near the shoreline, making it a scenic stop for a roadside meal. The quiet lake views are a welcome break on the long Highway 3 drive.
The park sits in prime boreal habitat where travellers frequently spot waterfowl, songbirds, and occasionally moose. Wood bison are common along this stretch of Highway 3, so watch from your vehicle and keep a safe distance.
The lake, spruce forest, and wide subarctic sky make this a popular photo pull-off. Sunset and twilight are especially striking during the long summer evenings.
Anglers can cast from the shoreline for northern pike and other species typical of NWT lakes. A valid NWT sport fishing licence is required.
The wetland edges attract loons, ducks, and boreal songbirds in summer. Spring and fall migrations bring additional species passing through the region.
Chan Lake serves as a practical mid-route rest stop between Fort Providence and Yellowknife. RVers can stretch, use pit toilets, and check tires before continuing on the highway.
