Late June through early September offers the warmest weather, the driest trail conditions, and the longest daylight hours for exploring the coast. Early summer is prime time for spotting icebergs drifting south along the Avalon and for seeing humpback and minke whales feeding offshore. Shoulder months of late May and September bring fewer visitors and cooler temperatures, but fog, wind, and rain are common year round. Winter access is not recommended for RVs due to snow, ice, and unplowed gravel approaches.

Explore rugged, unmarked wilderness trails that follow the clifftops and barrens above the Atlantic. Expect wet, boggy sections and dramatic ocean views. Sturdy waterproof footwear is essential.
The pebble and sand beach at the mouth of the cove is ideal for walking, rock-hounding, and looking for driftwood. The shoreline is exposed to surf, so keep a safe distance from the water.
In late spring and early summer, icebergs drift south along the Avalon's Atlantic coast and can often be spotted from the park's headlands. Bring binoculars and check local iceberg trackers before visiting.
Humpback, minke, and fin whales feed off the coast in summer and can be seen from the cliffs above the cove. Mornings with calm seas offer the best viewing conditions.
Coastal barrens and cliffs attract gulls, gannets, and other seabirds, while the surrounding boreal forest supports moose, fox, and woodland birds. A spotting scope or binoculars greatly improves the experience.
The combination of sea cliffs, coastal barrens, fog, and changeable weather makes Chance Cove a rewarding spot for landscape and seascape photography. Sunrise and late-day light are especially dramatic along the headlands.
The gravel parking area near the cove serves as an informal day-use spot for picnicking after a hike or beach walk. Bring all food, water, and pack-out supplies, as services are minimal.

Chance Cove Provincial Park, NL, Canada
The park lies roughly 100 km south of St. John's, about a 90 minute drive via Route 10, the Irish Loop, through Bay Bulls, Ferryland, and Cappahayden. From Argentia, where the Marine Atlantic ferry from Nova Scotia lands, it is approximately a 2 hour drive across the Avalon Peninsula. The final access is a narrow, unpaved gravel road that can be rough, muddy, and tight for large motorhomes, so caution is advised for rigs over about 25 feet. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travellers is St. John's International Airport (YYT).
