April through June and mid-September through November are the prime windows for RV travel to Cheaha. The U.S. Forest Service suggests mid-September to November for fall foliage and April to June for spring growth. Summer is usable thanks to higher elevations that moderate Alabama heat, but weekends fill quickly. Winter visits are possible year-round, with occasional ice events on the mountain road.

The Bunker Tower marks the 2,407-foot summit and delivers 360-degree views over the Talladega National Forest. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps from native sandstone, it is a short walk from a paved parking area suitable for most RVs.
This flat, accessible boardwalk leads through mountain laurel to a dramatic sandstone overlook on the park's west rim. The trailhead has a paved lot that accommodates trailers and Class A motorhomes.
Pulpit Rock is a rocky promontory with sweeping views west toward the Coosa Valley. The trail is short but rocky and uneven, with RV-friendly parking near the trailhead on the main park road.
The Pinhoti crosses through Cheaha State Park and continues into the adjacent Cheaha Wilderness. Segments near the park traverse hardwood forests, shady hollows, and mountain streams, with day-hike options in either direction from the summit.
Cheaha Lake sits at the base of the mountain and offers a sandy swimming beach, picnic pavilions, and a short loop trail. The access road descends steeply from the summit, so drivers of large rigs may prefer to shuttle down in a tow vehicle.
Lake Chinnabee offers hiking trails that connect to Cheaha Falls via the Chinnabee Silent Trail in the adjacent national forest. The area is reached by forest roads below the park and offers a cooler, creek-side hike.
The Talladega Scenic Drive is a paved ridgetop route linking Cheaha with the wider Talladega National Forest. The roughly 50-minute drive along State Route 281 climbs to 2,407 feet at Alabama's highest point with far-reaching Appalachian views.
This short, paved path leads to Bald Rock and is wheelchair and stroller friendly. It is the most RV-accessible overlook in the park and a good first stop after setting up camp.

Cheaha State Park, AL, United States
Cheaha State Park sits off Alabama Highway 281 in Cleburne and Clay counties, about 90 minutes east of Birmingham and roughly two hours west of Atlanta. The main approach from I-20 uses exits near Heflin or Oxford, then climbs Highway 281, a narrow, winding mountain road with steep grades and tight curves that large motorhomes and long trailers should drive slowly. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers. RVers should watch for low-clearance tree canopy, limited pull-offs, and reduced cell signal on the ascent.
