Late June through August is the peak window, when Black River Pond is open for swimming, the campground is fully operational, and weather is warm and reliable. September offers cooler nights, fall color in the Taconic Hills, and far lighter crowds, making it ideal for RV travelers who prefer quiet sites. May and early June are good shoulder-season options once overnight freezes end, though some facilities may still be limited. Winters are cold and snowy, and most services are closed.

Black River Pond has a small sand swimming beach staffed by lifeguards in summer. The calm, spring-fed water is a cool retreat on hot Capital Region afternoons and sits a short walk from the day-use parking area.
The pond is open to non-motorized boats, including canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, and is stocked with warmwater species for fishing. A New York State fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.
A network of short, rolling hiking trails loops through mixed hardwood forest around Black River Pond and connects into the adjacent Capital District Wildlife Management Area. Most routes are under a few miles and suitable for casual day hikes.
Shaded picnic tables and grills are set near the pond and swim area, making the park a relaxed spot for lunch or a family cookout. Restrooms and a playground are nearby.
The park offers a small, quiet campground with rustic sites suited to tents, pop-ups, and smaller trailers. Facilities include a comfort station; there are no hookups, so self-contained RVs should plan water and power use accordingly.
The state park abuts the Capital District WMA, which offers additional miles of woods roads and trails for hiking, birdwatching, and, in season, hunting. Check NYSDEC rules before visiting during hunting seasons.
Grafton Lakes State Park lies a short drive west and offers larger swim beaches, paddling, and extensive trails. It pairs well with a stay at Cherry Plain for RVers wanting more activity options in the region.
We had an incredible experience. The rig was very clean and organized. Josh was very accommodating and fluid with our requests. 10-10 would do again

Josh is a great host, very flexible and responsive. The RV is in pristine condition, clean and everything works perfectly. We went on a few scenic road trips and it drove beautifully. Wonderful experience and we would certainly rent it again, highly recommend, thanks Josh!

My son and I stayed in this camper for a long weekend in the Catskills. It was perfect, and exactly what we were looking for. We will definitely be staying in it every year for this event!

We had an absolutely fantastic experience renting this small camper! It was immaculate—spotless, fresh, and perfectly maintained. As first-time campers, we were a little nervous, but Krystal’s wonderful communication made everything so easy. Krystal & Greg went above and beyond by personally setting up our sewer and water connections, which was incredibly helpful and reassuring. Their kindness and attention to detail made our trip stress-free and so enjoyable. Highly recommend renting from them—you won’t be disappointed!

Cherry Plain State Park, NY, United States
The park sits in the hamlet of Cherry Plain in eastern Rensselaer County, roughly 30 miles east of Albany, NY (about a 45 minute drive) and about 40 miles northwest of Pittsfield, MA. Most RVers approach via Interstate 90 to NY Route 22, then east on local roads such as NY Route 22 and County Route 33; expect narrow, winding rural two-lane roads with some short grades as you climb into the Taconic foothills, so drive slowly and watch for low-hanging branches and tight turns. There are no tunnels or weight-restricted bridges directly on the approach, but large Class A or long fifth-wheel rigs should plan turns carefully. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Albany International Airport (ALB), about an hour west of the park.
