The best months to visit Chewacla State Park are October and November, when fall color peaks, humidity drops, and daytime highs are comfortable for hiking and biking. Spring, from late March through May, is also excellent, with wildflowers, flowing waterfalls, and moderate temperatures. Summer is hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms but remains popular for lake swimming and paddling. Winters are mild and uncrowded, a good shoulder season for RV travelers seeking open campsites, though overnight lows can dip below freezing.
Cool and damp; campground open year-round
Wildflowers begin; waterfalls at peak flow
Hot, humid; afternoon thunderstorms common
Peak heat; hydrate and avoid midday trail use
Auburn home-game weekends fill campground early
Peak fall color and prime RV travel weather
Cool, quiet season; reserve water hoses against freezes
The CAMP (Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers) trail system inside the park offers more than 30 miles of singletrack built and maintained by local volunteers. Trails range from beginner-friendly flow lines to technical rocky descents, and trailheads have space for vehicles with bike racks.
Chewacla Falls is the CCC-built dam spillway where Chewacla Lake pours over into the creek below, creating a photogenic cascade. A short, well-marked path from the day-use area leads to viewing points and the base of the falls.
The 26-acre lake has a designated seasonal swim area with a sandy beach and is open to kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. Rentals are often available on-site in warmer months, and electric motors are permitted for fishing.
A network of hiking-only and shared-use trails loops around Chewacla Lake and through the surrounding hardwood forest. Distances range from under a mile to several miles, with modest elevation and shaded tread that makes them comfortable in most seasons.
Chewacla Lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and crappie and is accessible from the bank, a fishing pier, and small craft. An Alabama freshwater fishing license is required for anglers sixteen and older.
The park has multiple picnic areas and rentable pavilions scattered near the lake and falls, with grills, tables, and restrooms nearby. Large pull-through parking areas near the main pavilions accommodate tow vehicles and shorter motorhomes.
Downtown Auburn and the Auburn University campus are a short drive from the park and make an easy rainy-day outing. Toomer's Corner, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, and numerous restaurants are within about 10 minutes by car.
Wow, we had a ball in this camper! Me, my husband and our 3 1/2 year old son. We were all comfortable, beds slept great and this camper was CLEAN, looked brand new! The West are so friendly, we can't wait to rent with them again.

Cannot recommend Auburn RV Rentals enough! We were trying to coordinate a busy birthday weekend, including picking up the camper, and Jeff was nice enough to text the morning before our reservation and offer free delivery and setup. Everything was perfect—bedding, towels, kitchen essentials, coffee—everything! We can’t wait to rent from Jeff and Auburn RV Rentals again!

Chewacla State Park, AL, United States
Chewacla State Park is located just off Interstate 85 at Exit 51, about 5 miles south of downtown Auburn and roughly 60 miles northeast of Montgomery (about a one-hour drive). Atlanta is approximately 110 miles to the northeast, a two-hour drive on I-85. The access roads are paved and suitable for large RVs, with no tunnels, mountain passes, or steep grades to navigate, though the final approach road into the campground is narrow and winding, so drivers of longer rigs should take it slow. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, with Montgomery Regional Airport offering a closer but smaller option.
