Mid-June through early September is the best window, when the campground and boat launch are fully open, daylight is long, and the Haines Highway is clear of snow. July and August offer the warmest temperatures and the best odds of whale and eagle sightings from the shoreline. Late May and mid-September work as shoulder seasons with fewer visitors, though nights are cold and services in Haines begin winding down. Winter access is limited and the campground is closed.

The park's picnic and day-use area offers direct across-the-inlet views of Rainbow Glacier and Davidson Glacier. A paved parking area accommodates RVs for short stops, and benches and picnic tables line the shoreline.
Seduction Point Trail is a long out-and-back coastal route from the campground area to the tip of the Chilkat Peninsula, with beach and forest sections. It is typically done as an overnight or a very long day hike, with views of Davidson Glacier and Chilkat Inlet.
The Chilkat Inlet shoreline is a reliable spot for spotting humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, harbor seals, and bald eagles in summer. Bring binoculars and scan from the beach or picnic area.
A small boat launch inside the park provides access to Chilkat Inlet for saltwater fishing, kayaking, and small-boat touring. Salmon and halibut are the main targets in season.
Short trails from the campground lead down to rocky and gravel beaches along the inlet. These make a good stretch-the-legs stop for RV travelers, with tide pools and driftwood at low tide.
The nearby Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, along the Haines Highway, holds one of the largest concentrations of bald eagles in the world during the late-autumn salmon run. Several pullouts along the Chilkat River accommodate RVs for viewing.
The park is one of the most accessible places to photograph Davidson Glacier, which flows down from the Chilkat Range across the inlet. Early morning and late evening light in summer offer the best conditions.

Chilkat State Park, AK, United States
Chilkat State Park is reached by driving Mud Bay Road roughly 7 miles south from Haines, Alaska. Haines is about 150 miles (3 to 3.5 hours) from Haines Junction, Yukon, via the Haines Highway, which crosses Chilkat Pass at over 3,500 feet with steep grades, long climbs, and no services for long stretches, so RVers should top off fuel and check brakes before the pass. Many RV travelers also arrive via the Alaska Marine Highway ferry from Skagway or Juneau, since no road connects Haines directly to those towns. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips is Haines Airport (HNS), with larger connections through Juneau International Airport (JNU).
