Late June through early September is the prime window, when the road is clear, the campground is fully open, and daylight stretches past 10 p.m. Mid-July to mid-August brings the sockeye and pink salmon runs that draw brown bears to the Chilkoot River weir, making it the peak wildlife-viewing period. Shoulder seasons in May and September are quieter and often drier, but nights are cold and some services in Haines operate on reduced hours. Winter access is limited and the campground is closed.

The Chilkoot River corridor between the lake outlet and Lutak Inlet is one of Alaska's best roadside brown bear viewing areas during the summer salmon runs. Pullouts and a fish weir provide safe vantage points, and rangers often work the corridor to manage traffic and wildlife encounters.
The lake offers fishing for Dolly Varden, cutthroat trout, and sockeye salmon, with a public boat launch at the campground. Canoes, kayaks, and small powerboats can explore the mountain-ringed shoreline on calm mornings.
A string of day-use pullouts along the river below the lake is ideal for picnics, wildlife photography, and watching spawning salmon. The short walk to the weir platform is level and family-friendly.

From downtown Haines, follow Lutak Road about 10 miles northeast to the end of the pavement at Chilkoot Lake. Haines itself is reached by the Haines Highway from Haines Junction, Yukon, roughly a 150-mile, 3 to 4 hour drive that crosses Chilkat Pass, a high, exposed mountain pass where weather can change quickly and RV drivers should watch for wind, fog, and late-season snow. Alaska Marine Highway ferries from Skagway and Juneau dock in Haines and carry RVs. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips is Haines Airport (HNS), with larger regional service through Juneau International Airport (JNU).
