Best time to visit Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site

Late June through early September is the prime window, when the road is clear, the campground is fully open, and daylight stretches past 10 p.m. Mid-July to mid-August brings the sockeye and pink salmon runs that draw brown bears to the Chilkoot River weir, making it the peak wildlife-viewing period. Shoulder seasons in May and September are quieter and often drier, but nights are cold and some services in Haines operate on reduced hours. Winter access is limited and the campground is closed.
