Best time to visit Cloudland Canyon State Park

Spring, from April through early June, offers the best overall conditions for RV travel, with mild temperatures, high waterfall flow, and wildflowers along Sitton's Gulch. Fall, especially mid-October through early November, is the other peak window for color on the canyon rim and cool hiking weather. Summer is open and green but hot and humid, with thunderstorms common in the afternoon. Winter is quieter and scenic after rainfall, though cold snaps can bring ice to stairs and overlooks.

Things to do at Cloudland Canyon State Park

  • West Rim Loop Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The West Rim Loop is a roughly 4.8-mile hike along the canyon's west rim with some of the park's most iconic overlooks. Trailhead parking near the main day-use area accommodates most RVs with careful maneuvering. Expect rolling terrain with exposed rock views into Sitton's Gulch.

  • Waterfalls Trail to Cherokee and Hemlock Falls Strenuous
    RV parking available

This out-and-back trail descends steep metal staircases to two plunge waterfalls fed by Daniel Creek. The round trip is about two miles with roughly 600 steps, so it is strenuous on the return. Trailhead parking is near the main overlook lot.

  • Sitton's Gulch Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

Sitton's Gulch Trail enters the canyon from the bottom and links to the Waterfalls Trail for a longer canyon-floor hike. The lower trailhead is accessed from a separate entrance off Lyle Lane and typically has space for standard RVs. The route passes large boulders, hemlocks, and creek cascades.

  • Main Overlook and Rim Walk Easy
    RV parking available

A short, paved walk from the main parking area leads to the park's signature canyon overlook. It is suitable for nearly all visitors and offers panoramic views where Daniel Creek and Bear Creek canyons converge. Large pull-through spaces make it RV friendly for a quick stop.

  • Five Points Recreation Area Mountain Biking Moderate
    RV parking available

Five Points is the park's mountain bike and trail hub with more than 30 miles of shared-use singletrack on the plateau. The trailhead has a dedicated parking area that can fit trailers and smaller motorhomes. Loops range from beginner-friendly to technical.

  • Cloudland Connector Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

This multi-use trail links Cloudland Canyon with surrounding public lands for long-distance hiking and biking. It is popular for gravel cycling and trail running on the forested plateau. Parking is available at Five Points and other trailheads suited to most RVs.

  • Cloudland Canyon Disc Golf Course Easy
    RV parking available

An 18-hole disc golf course winds through mixed hardwood forest near the main campground. The course is walkable for most visitors and adds a low-impact activity for RV families. Parking is close to the day-use area.

John made our family trip as simple as possible and overall simply flawless. He went out of his way to make sure we were aware of everything we needed to know and was on time for dropoff and pickup! Will certainly be using John and his family again.

The van was perfect for our biking road trip into the mountains. It was easy to drive and made for a comfortable camp out. The kitchen was fun to use and had everything we needed. The hosts were so easy to work with at pick up and drop off. Eric actually biked to our house and picked up the van. We will definitely do it again!

How to get to Cloudland Canyon State Park

The park is in Dade County near Rising Fawn, about 25 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee (roughly 40 minutes), and about 125 miles northwest of Atlanta (around 2.5 hours via I-75 and I-59). RV drivers should plan routes via I-59 and GA-136, which climbs Lookout Mountain with steep grades and tight curves; large rigs should avoid narrow secondary roads and check local weight and height limits. Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers, with Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson as a larger alternative.
