Best time to visit Columbia Plateau Trail State Park

Late April through mid-June and September through October are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, offering mild temperatures and wildflower or fall color displays across the scablands. Things to do at Columbia Plateau Trail State Park

  • Ride the Fish Lake Paved Section Easy
    RV parking available

    The paved segment from Fish Lake Trailhead near Cheney runs about 23 miles south to Martin Road and is ideal for road biking, inline skating, and family cycling. The wide flat grade follows the old rail bed past ponderosa pine, basalt cliffs, and small lakes. Fish Lake Trailhead has a large paved lot that accommodates RVs and tow vehicles.

  • Hike the Amber Lake to Martin Road Stretch Easy

    This paved mid-trail section offers quiet walking with views of Amber Lake and surrounding wetlands. The gentle rail grade makes it accessible to all abilities. Amber Lake has a trailhead parking area with room for mid-size rigs.

  • Mountain Bike the Washtucna to Snake River Segment Moderate
    RV parking available

    The southern unpaved section between Washtucna and the Snake River delivers a remote gravel ride through basalt canyons and Snake River breaks country. The crushed basalt ballast calls for wider tires and self-sufficient riders. Cell service is limited, so download maps in advance.

  • Wildlife and Birdwatching at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge

    The refuge sits a short drive from the northern trailhead near Cheney and offers wetland birding just minutes from Fish Lake. Waterfowl, moose, and raptors are common. A paved auto tour route accommodates RVs.

  • Explore Channeled Scablands Geology Easy

    The trail corridor crosses classic Ice Age Floods features including coulees, dry falls, and basalt bluffs. Interpretive signage at multiple trailheads explains the geology. The scenery is best photographed in low morning or evening light.

  • Horseback Riding on the Unpaved Sections

    South of Martin Road, the soft cinder and ballast surface is popular with equestrians. Several trailheads include horse-trailer turnarounds and hitching rails. Bring your own water as troughs are not maintained.

  • Day Trip to Palouse Falls State Park Easy
    RV parking available

    Palouse Falls is about a 30-minute drive from the southern trail access near Washtucna and features a dramatic 198-foot waterfall into a basalt canyon. The viewpoint has RV-friendly parking. Combine a morning trail ride with an afternoon at the falls.

How to get to Columbia Plateau Trail State Park

The northern Fish Lake Trailhead sits about 20 minutes southwest of Spokane via I-90 and SR 904 near Cheney, roughly a 15-mile drive from Spokane International Airport, which is the nearest fly-and-rent hub. Southern access points near Washtucna and the Snake River are reached via US 395 and SR 260, about 35 to 45 minutes from Pasco. Roads to trailheads are generally flat with no tunnels or major mountain passes, but gravel access roads to some southern trailheads can be rough and tight for long motorhomes and fifth wheels, so check turnaround space before committing.
