Spring (March through May) and fall (October through November) offer the most comfortable conditions for RV travel, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and fewer mosquitoes than the summer months. Summer visits bring heavy humidity, afternoon thunderstorms, and biting insects, though the forest canopy provides dense shade. Winter is quiet and cool, with bare trees making wildlife easier to spot, but flooding can temporarily close sections of the boardwalk and low trails. Shoulder-season travelers should check current conditions before arrival, since floods may cover trails any time of year.

The Boardwalk Loop is a 2.4-mile elevated wooden boardwalk that starts at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center and winds through the old-growth floodplain forest toward Weston Lake, an oxbow cut off from a former bend in the Congaree River. The raised walkway keeps visitors above seasonal flooding and is the most accessible way to experience the park's towering canopy. nps.gov/cong/planyourvisit/boardwalk.htm
Cedar Creek is the park's signature paddle, leading canoes and kayaks through a tunnel of green leaves in spring and summer. Paddlers routinely spot river otters, herons, turtles, and occasionally alligators along the blackwater channel. nps.gov/cong/planyourvisit/canoeing.htm
This 4.5-mile loop extends beyond the boardwalk to the banks of Weston Lake, an oxbow lake formed when the Congaree River changed course. The trail passes champion-size cypress and tupelo trees and is a reliable spot for watching wildlife from the water's edge.
The Congaree River Blue Trail is a 50-mile designated recreational paddle trail that runs from downtown Columbia downstream to Congaree National Park. Multi-day paddlers can shuttle between public access points upstream of the park boundary. nps.gov/cong/
The Kingsnake Trail is a quieter 7.2-mile out-and-back route on the eastern side of the park, popular with birders seeking prothonotary warblers, woodpeckers, and barred owls. The trail crosses sloughs and low floodplain and can be muddy or flooded after rain.
The Harry Hampton Visitor Center is the park's main orientation point, with exhibits on the old-growth forest, floodplain ecology, and the conservation movement that saved Congaree from logging. Rangers here provide current trail and flood conditions before heading out. nps.gov/cong/
For roughly two weeks in late spring, synchronous fireflies put on a rare light display in the forest around the visitor center. Access during the event is managed through a lottery-based vehicle reservation system posted on the park website. nps.gov/cong/planyourvisit/permitsadnreservations.htm

Congaree National Park, SC, United States
The park entrance at 100 National Park Road in Hopkins, South Carolina is roughly 20 miles (about 30 minutes) southeast of downtown Columbia via SC-48 (Bluff Road). Charlotte, North Carolina sits about 115 miles north (just over 2 hours) and Charleston is around 115 miles southeast (about 2 hours) via I-26. There are no mountain passes, tunnels, or steep grades on the approach, but the final miles follow narrow two-lane rural roads, so large rigs should take turns slowly and watch for soft shoulders. Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) is the closest option for fly-and-rent travelers, roughly 30 minutes from the park.
