Late June through August offers the warmest weather, full campground operations, and the best conditions for swimming and paddling on the Wisconsin River. September and early October bring cooler temperatures, fewer biting insects, and fall color through the surrounding hardwoods, making it a strong shoulder season for RV travel. May and early June can be wet and buggy but quieter, while winter brings deep cold and snow, with most camping facilities closed.

The park has a designated sandy swimming beach on the Wisconsin River impoundment known as Lake Alexander. It is a short walk from the day-use parking area and is a popular summer stop for families.
A public boat launch provides access to the Wisconsin River flowage for kayaking, canoeing, and motorboating. The slow-moving impoundment is well suited to flatwater paddling and shoreline fishing.
Several miles of marked trails wind through pine and hardwood forest within the park. Routes are generally flat and short, making them accessible for most ability levels.
Designated multi-use trails in the park are open to mountain biking outside of winter. Surfaces are mostly natural and rolling, with no significant climbs.
Anglers can fish from shore or boat for walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and panfish. A current Wisconsin fishing license is required.
Shaded picnic areas with tables and grills sit near the beach and river. Several shelters can be reserved for group gatherings.
In winter, park trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when snow allows. The campground is closed during this period, but day-use access continues.
We were very happy with the quality of the RV and the quality of communication with Linda. Everything worked well in the RV and the delivery and pick-up services were right on time. Will definitely rent from Linda in the future!

Council Grounds State Park, WI, United States
The park sits just west of Merrill, Wisconsin, off State Highway 107, about 20 minutes north of Wausau via US Highway 51 and roughly a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Madison or Milwaukee. Roads in are paved and generally easy for RVs, with no major mountain passes or tunnels, though drivers should watch for low-clearance railroad underpasses in older town centers and use Highway 51 rather than narrow county roads. Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA) in Mosinee is the nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers, about 30 minutes south of the park.
