Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather, with long daylight hours ideal for swimming at Stoltz Pool and hiking the river trails. July and August are peak season, so campground reservations are recommended well in advance. May, June, and September make excellent shoulder months for quieter RV trips, though river currents can run high in spring. Swimming is popular at the Stoltz Pool day-use area and below Skutz Falls, but the Cowichan River has fluctuating water levels and swift currents.

This historic trail winds its way along the Cowichan River for approximately 20 km from Glenora to Skutz Falls, at an easy to moderate level, requiring roughly 6.5 hours to hike its length. RV travellers can stage at Skutz Falls or Glenora trailheads and day-hike a shorter section. bcparks.ca/cowichan-river-park/
This 8 km loop trail gives spectacular views along the Cowichan River, crossing at both the Skutz Falls forest service bridge and the historic 66 Mile Trestle through a steep canyon environment high above the river. Access begins from the Skutz Falls day-use area. bcparks.ca/cowichan-river-park/
Swimming is a popular activity at the Stoltz Pool day-use area and below Skutz Falls. The site sits next to the campground, making it the easiest river access for RV campers. The Cowichan River has fluctuating water levels and swift currents, so children should be accompanied by an adult near the water. bcparks.ca/cowichan-river-park/
The Cowichan River is internationally known for its highly valuable and productive fish habitat, with species including coho, Chinook and chum salmon, steelhead and rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. Anglers need a valid BC freshwater licence and should check current DFO regulations. bcparks.ca/cowichan-river-park/
This section of the Trans Canada Trail route stretches from Glenora to Skutz Falls, involving restored railway trestles and roughly 13 kilometres of rehabilitated Canadian Pacific Railway grade, with spectacular views high above the Cowichan River. The gentle rail-grade surface suits family cycling. bcparks.ca/cowichan-river-park/
Marie Canyon offers dramatic views of a narrow river gorge downstream of Skutz Falls. Access is via Skutz Falls Road off Highway 18, which also reaches the Skutz Falls day-use area and trailhead. Severe rapids exist at Marie Canyon and Skutz Falls throughout the year. bcparks.ca/cowichan-river-park/
This relatively short, gentle loop trail runs from the Stoltz Pool day-use area adjacent to the river for much of its length before climbing inland through second-growth forest above the campground, with excellent fishing at many spots along the way. It is ideal for an evening walk from the RV site. bcparks.ca/cowichan-river-park/

We had a wonderful trip with this camper. Easy to tow, yet vary spacious inside. Alicia was very flexible on pick up and drop off times. Also very quick to respond to any questions we had during the trip. Much recommended!

Cowichan River Provincial Park, BC, Canada
The Highway 18 Connector, off Highway 18, provides access to the Stoltz Pool campground, group campsite and day-use areas, via Riverbottom Road. From Victoria, the drive north on Highway 1 and west on Highway 18 takes roughly one hour and 15 minutes (about 75 km), while Nanaimo sits about one hour north via Highway 1. RV drivers should watch for the Malahat summit on Highway 1 south of Duncan, a winding mountain section with steep grades and weather-related closures in winter; Riverbottom Road is a narrow rural route, so take wider turns with larger rigs. Victoria International Airport (YYJ) is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travellers, about 90 minutes south.
