Crimson Lake Provincial Park, AB, Canada
Crimson Lake Provincial Park is located 14 kilometres west of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, via Highway 756 off the David Thompson Highway. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from Edmonton and 1 hour from Rocky Mountain House. The park access road is well-maintained for RVs year-round, though winter driving requires caution due to snow and ice. The nearest airport is Red Deer International Airport, approximately 90 kilometres away.
The optimal time to visit Crimson Lake is mid-July through mid-August when temperatures are warmest (highs around 22°C / 72°F) and roads are clear. May through September offers the best combination of weather and full facility availability, with both campgrounds open and all amenities operational. Shoulder seasons in April and October provide fewer crowds but require attention to weather changes, while winter months are suitable only for RVers prepared for snow with vehicles capable of handling winter conditions.

A 10-kilometre moderate hiking loop around Crimson Lake offering scenic views, benches, and interpretive panels. The trail takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to complete and winds through forests and wetlands with covered shelters and outhouses. The trailhead is accessible from the main campground with nearby RV parking.
A shorter trail through wetlands and boreal forest featuring a boardwalk section and side trails to a sandpit. Multiple connected trails including Fallen Timber, North Woods, and Wolf Track offer varying lengths for different hiking preferences. All are accessible from the campground day-use area.
Crimson Lake offers excellent opportunities for powerboating, canoeing, kayaking, and windsurfing with a public boat launch. Twin Lakes provides a quieter option with a 12 km/h speed limit suitable for paddling and small motorboats. Both lakes are accessible from RV campsites.
Crimson Lake is well-stocked with perch available year-round, while Twin Lakes offers excellent trout and perch fishing. Winter ice fishing is popular when the lakes freeze. Twin Lakes features fish cleaning stations for visitor convenience.
A public sandy beach at Crimson Lake provides swimming and sunbathing opportunities during summer months. The beach area includes playground facilities and volleyball courts, with RV parking nearby at the main campground.
The park's convergence of three ecosystems supports diverse wildlife including moose, deer, sandhill cranes, solitary sandpipers, and northern pygmy owls. Early morning and dusk are optimal times for observation along trails and from the lake.
During winter months, the maintained trail system provides excellent cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. Ice fishing is popular on both lakes, and the frozen landscape offers a different perspective of the park's ecosystems.
Ryan was great to deal with. He responded quickly to our questions before and during the rental process. He went way beyond simply renting the trailer to us-- he recommended sites in the area, and when the power went out in the campground, he was ready and willing to bring a generator to the campsite!! The only negative was the weather on the Thanksgiving weekend (6 inches of snow, ugh) and, unfortunately, Ryan couldn't fix that! Thanks, Ryan, for making our first RV rental experience a positive one.

We had a great weekend at Crimson Lake in Ryan's trailer. He had it all set up and ready to go for us when we arrived. We really appreciated the large outdoor BBQ he provided in the trailer as it's nice to cook outside. He also provided plenty of camp chairs and lots of plastic food containers. I always forget to bring Tupperware for leftovers. Great communication and very accommodating. Wouldn't hesitate to rent from him again.

The trailer was perfect for our family camping trip. It came with everything we needed. The trailer was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the living space was perfect. Had a nice two seater couch and a nice dining room table. John was easy to communicate with and answered all my questions. Would definitely rent his trailer again.
