Late fall through early spring, roughly October through April, is the most comfortable window, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and far fewer biting insects. March and April offer warm days ideal for paddling and hiking before summer heat settles in. Summer brings high humidity, afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy mosquito and gnat activity, though shaded campsites help. Hurricane season runs June through November, so RVers should monitor coastal weather advisories.

Crooked River State Park is a common launch point for paddlers heading to Cumberland Island National Seashore. Routes such as the 11 to 12 mile paddle to Brickhill Bluff Wilderness Site require timing departure with high tide and the return with the outgoing low tide. Strong tidal currents demand careful planning.
A short loop through maritime forest and palmetto understory near the main day-use area. The trail is flat and shaded, making it suitable for a quick leg-stretch from the campground. Interpretive signs highlight local flora and fauna.
This longer hiking trail winds through pine forest and along salt marsh edges with river views. Birders often spot wading birds, osprey, and songbirds along the route. Wear insect repellent in warmer months.
Anglers can fish directly from the park's riverbank or launch small boats from the on-site ramp into the tidal Crooked River. Common catches include redfish, flounder, and trout. A valid Georgia saltwater fishing license is required.
A small interpretive center near the historic tabby ruins of the McIntosh Sugar Works. Exhibits cover local ecology, wildlife, and the site's 19th-century history. It is an easy stop between hikes or paddling trips.
The park's mix of salt marsh, maritime forest, and riverfront supports a rich variety of wildlife. Visitors commonly see herons, egrets, ibis, and occasional alligators along the waterways. Early morning and late afternoon are the best viewing windows.
The park maintains a small miniature golf course and picnic facilities near the group shelter. It is a family-friendly option for rest days at camp. Picnic tables and restrooms are located nearby.
