Late spring through early fall, roughly May through October, offers the most comfortable hiking weather and the best trail conditions. September and early October are particularly popular for fall colors across the oak woodlands and prairie overlooks. Shoulder months like April and November can be muddy after thaw or rain, so sturdy footwear is advised. Winters are cold and snowy, and trails may be used for snowshoeing but are not groomed.

The Cross Plains segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail passes through the park and surrounding reserve, offering rolling terrain through prairie and woodland. Trailhead parking is available along Old Sauk Pass Road near the NPS interpretive site. nps.gov/iatr/planyourvisit/int_site.htm
The adjacent NPS-managed Cross Plains Interpretive Site at 8075 Old Sauk Pass Road provides exhibits and an orientation to the Ice Age Trail and glacial geology of the area. It is a short drive from the state park property. nps.gov/iatr/planyourvisit/int_site.htm
The park's mix of restored prairie, oak savanna, and woodland habitats supports a variety of songbirds, raptors, and native mammals. Early morning and dusk are productive times for quiet observation.
Cross Plains sits near the boundary between the Driftless Area and lands glaciated during the last ice age, making it a strong spot to see kettles, moraines, and related landforms. Interpretive materials at the NPS site help put features in context. nps.gov/iatr/learn/nature/index.htm
The rolling Driftless-edge landscape, restored prairie, and oak woodland provide varied subjects year-round. Autumn color and summer wildflower bloom are particularly popular.
When snow cover is adequate, the park's trails are open for snowshoeing and quiet winter hiking. Trails are not groomed, so visitors should come prepared for off-trail conditions.
About 25 miles west, Blue Mound State Park offers developed RV-friendly campsites, observation towers, and additional Ice Age Trail access. It makes a convenient base camp for exploring Cross Plains. dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/bluemound
Ross was great to work with & the experience exceeded our expectations! He was very accommodating with pick up- we live out of state and ran into unexpected delays on our way to pick up. The rental was very clean, came stocked with anything we needed, and was a very pleasant experience. We will be repeat renters!
