Culpeper Battlefields State Park, VA, United States
The park units sit in Culpeper County, Virginia, roughly 75 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. (about 1 hour 30 minutes) and about 45 miles northeast of Charlottesville (about 1 hour). Most RV access is via US Route 15, US Route 29, and State Route 3, all of which are well suited to larger rigs; avoid narrow farm lanes and posted weight-limited rural bridges when navigating between battlefield tracts. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Washington Dulles International (IAD), about 65 miles north, with Richmond International (RIC) another practical option to the southeast.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons to explore the open battlefield fields, with mild temperatures and lower humidity making the walking trails and interpretive stops more enjoyable. Late April through early June aligns with the anniversary of the Battle of Brandy Station and often brings living-history and commemorative events. Summer visits are possible but hot and humid, with little shade on the open pastures, so early-morning visits are recommended. Winter is quiet and the terrain is typically accessible, though trails can be muddy after rain or snow.
Cold and quiet, trails can be muddy or icy after storms.

Brandy Station is the site of the largest cavalry battle ever fought in the Western Hemisphere, where nearly 21,000 soldiers clashed at Saint James Church, Fleetwood Hill, and Yew Ridge on June 9, 1863. Walking paths and interpretive signage cover the cavalry engagements across open farmland. The confidence Union cavalry gained here proved critical four weeks later at Gettysburg. nps.gov/articles/000/a-strong-calvary-brandy-station-battlefield.htm
Fleetwood Hill is the commanding ridge at the center of the Brandy Station battlefield and one of the most fought-over pieces of ground in North America. A short walking loop and interpretive panels highlight the cavalry charges that swept across its slopes. nps.gov/articles/000/a-strong-calvary-brandy-station-battlefield.htm
The Saint James Church site marks the opening phase of the Battle of Brandy Station, where Union cavalry under Brigadier General Alfred Pleasonton crossed the Rappahannock River and attacked Confederate positions. Interpretive stops outline the fourteen-hour fight across the surrounding fields. nps.gov/articles/000/a-strong-calvary-brandy-station-battlefield.htm
Cedar Mountain Battlefield preserves the ground where Union forces met Stonewall Jackson in August 1862 south of the town of Culpeper. Walking paths cross the open farmland acquired with help from the American Battlefield Protection Program and partners. nps.gov/orgs/1207/04-30-20-nps-awards-grants-to-protect-historic-battlefields.htm
A self-guided driving route connects the main battlefield tracts across Culpeper County, making it the most practical way to see the park's scattered units in one visit. Most pullouts and trailheads accommodate vans, truck campers, and smaller Class C motorhomes. dcr.virginia.gov/
The nearby town of Culpeper offers a walkable downtown with restaurants, shops, and Civil War-era architecture that pairs well with a day at the battlefields. RV parking is easiest at larger municipal lots on the edge of town. visitculpeperva.com/
The Graffiti House near Brandy Station is a historic structure whose interior walls carry Civil War era signatures and sketches left by soldiers who were treated there. It functions as an interpretive companion to the battlefield units. nps.gov/articles/000/a-strong-calvary-brandy-station-battlefield.htm
