Best time to visit Dildo Run Provincial Park

Late June through August is the best window, with long daylight hours, daytime highs commonly in the high teens to low twenties Celsius, and the campground fully operational. Early July is prime iceberg viewing season along the nearby Twillingate coast, while August tends to bring the warmest water and the strongest whale sightings. Shoulder weeks in mid-June and early September are quieter and easier for last-minute RV bookings, but nights can be cold and some services reduced. Winter travel is not recommended as the park is closed for camping.

Things to do at Dildo Run Provincial Park

  • Sea Kayaking in the Run Moderate
    RV parking available

Paddling the sheltered waters of Dildo Run is a signature park activity, with calm passages weaving between dozens of small islands. Guided tours are available from operators in nearby Twillingate. Launching is easiest from the park's shoreline access points.

  • Coastal Hiking Trails Easy
    RV parking available

Short walking trails loop through boreal forest and lead to lookouts over the run and its islands. The paths are generally flat to rolling and suitable for most ability levels. Footing can be uneven and roots are common, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

  • Iceberg and Whale Viewing from Twillingate
    RV parking available

Twillingate is widely known as the Iceberg Capital of the World and sits about 20 km north of the park. Boat tours depart from the harbour in late June and July for icebergs and from July into August for humpback and minke whales. Most tour operators offer trailer parking nearby.

  • Long Point Lighthouse
    RV parking available

Long Point Lighthouse in Crow Head offers dramatic cliffside views of the Atlantic and is a popular sunset stop. The site has a paved parking area suitable for RVs and interpretive signage about local maritime history. Bring layers as the point is often windy and cooler than inland.

  • Prime Berth Fishing Heritage Centre Easy
    RV parking available

This family-run outdoor museum near Twillingate preserves traditional Newfoundland fishing stages, stores, and gear. Self-guided and guided tours explain the cod fishery that shaped the region. Parking accommodates larger vehicles.

  • Wildlife and Birdwatching Easy
    RV parking available

The park's mix of saltwater, islands, and forest attracts bald eagles, ospreys, common eiders, black guillemots, and a variety of songbirds. Early morning and evening offer the best viewing along the shoreline. Binoculars and a field guide enhance the experience.

  • Day Trip to Fogo Island

The Farewell ferry terminal is roughly an hour's drive from the park and connects to Fogo Island and Change Islands. Visitors can experience outport communities, rocky coastlines, and the landmark Fogo Island Inn. Check ferry schedules and length limits before taking a larger motorhome across.

How to get to Dildo Run Provincial Park

From Gander the drive is about 100 km and roughly 1.5 hours via Route 1 and Route 340, the main highway onto New World Island. Twillingate sits about 20 km north on the same route, and St. John's is approximately 440 km southeast, a five to six hour drive. The route is paved throughout with no tunnels or major mountain passes, but Route 340 is a two lane rural highway with rolling grades, wind-exposed causeways between islands, and moose activity at dawn and dusk, so RV drivers should reduce speed and allow extra stopping distance. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Gander International Airport (YQX).
