Winter stays are possible with mild days, though cold snaps and occasional ice storms can affect water hookups.

A designated sandy swim beach on Lake Lanier is the park's signature day-use feature. It includes a roped swim area, picnic shelters, and nearby restrooms within a short walk of RV parking.
The park's boat ramp provides direct RV-towable access to the upper Chattahoochee arm of Lake Lanier. Trailer parking is available on site, and the ramp is popular for fishing, pontoon, and paddle craft launches.
Several miles of multi-use trails loop through pine-hardwood forest and along the shoreline for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Trailheads are accessible from the main park road with vehicle pull-outs nearby.
Lake Lanier supports striped bass, spotted and largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and catfish. Anglers can fish from the bank, the courtesy dock, or a boat launched at the park ramp with a valid Georgia fishing license.
Calm coves near the campground offer sheltered water ideal for kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. Paddlers can explore the upper lake where the Chattahoochee River enters, watching for wading birds and bass.
Lakeside picnic shelters and open tables sit near the beach and boat ramp. Several shelters are reservable for groups and are a short walk from RV-accessible parking.
Quiet paved and gravel loops through the campground and cottage areas make for easy evening strolls with lake views. These short walks are suitable for families and pets on leash.

Michael is a great host. He was extremely helpful when picking up and dropping off the rv. He's flexible, communicative, and not overly nitpicky. I'd definitely rent from him again.
Cecilia V. - Jun 2026
My wife and I had a fantastic trip. Location was easy to find with great instructions. Michael was not able to meet for pickup, but his son was there to walk thru the operations of the rv. Don Carter State Park, GA, United States
The park is roughly 10 miles northeast of Gainesville, Georgia, about an hour (65 miles) from downtown Atlanta via I-985 and GA-365. From Greenville, South Carolina, it is about a 2.5-hour drive (140 miles) west on I-85. Access roads are paved two-lane routes with some rolling grades typical of the Georgia Piedmont, so RV drivers should watch for winding sections and low-hanging branches on secondary roads approaching the entrance. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), about 90 minutes south.
