Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with drier weather, longer days, and full access to shoreline and river activities. July and August bring the warmest temperatures and the busiest campground, so reservations are strongly recommended. Shoulder months like April, May, and October offer fewer crowds and good wildlife viewing, but expect cool, wet Pacific Northwest weather. Winter visits are possible since the park is open year-round, though rain and short daylight hours limit outdoor time.

Walking the saltwater shoreline at low tide is one of the park's signature experiences. Visitors can observe shellfish, shorebirds, and views across Hood Canal toward the Olympic Mountains. Check tide tables before heading out.
The park's meadows are well known for resident Roosevelt elk that often graze at dawn and dusk. RV travelers can watch from designated pullouts and viewing areas without leaving paved access. Keep a safe distance, especially during the fall rut.
The Dosewallips River runs through the park before emptying into Hood Canal, providing seasonal fishing and flat-water paddling near the mouth. Salmon runs draw anglers in season, with state regulations and licenses required.
This forested loop trail climbs through second-growth woods on the upland side of the park and passes a historic steam donkey logging artifact. It is a moderate workout with some elevation gain and is a good leg-stretcher for campers.
Hood Canal is famous for oysters and clams, and the park's tidelands are a popular harvest spot when seasons are open. A Washington shellfish license and current season check are required before harvesting.
Nearby Mt. Walker provides accessible views of the Olympic and Cascade peaks. The summit road is narrow, steep, and not suitable for large RVs or trailers, so plan to drive a tow vehicle or smaller car. On clear days the views stretch to Seattle and Mount Rainier. fs.usda.gov/r06/olympic/recreation/dosewallips-area
The Dosewallips River Basin gradually climbs from low temperate forest at Hood Canal into subalpine forests of fir and western white pine, eventually giving way to alpine meadows at its highest elevations. Lower trails along the river are accessible for day hikes, while upper sections are reached on foot due to a long-standing road washout.
The estuary where the Dosewallips River meets Hood Canal is rich habitat for herons, eagles, waterfowl, and shorebirds. Quiet morning walks from the campground offer the best chances to spot wildlife. Binoculars and a field guide are recommended.
Really awesome experience. Great little operation near the airport. Will definitely use them again!!

Chelsea was always quick to respond! The RV worked well for our group of 5. We used the RV to store food we shared with a large group at the Sol Duc group site.

Dosewallips State Park, WA, United States
The park is on US Highway 101 just south of Brinnon, Washington, on the west shore of Hood Canal. From Olympia, follow US Highway 101 north for about 61 miles to the Dosewallips area near Brinnon, roughly a 1 hour and 25 minute drive. From Seattle, plan on about 2.5 to 3 hours via the Tacoma Narrows Bridge or a ferry crossing, and note that US 101 along Hood Canal is winding with limited passing lanes, so larger RVs should drive cautiously and watch for tight shoulders and occasional steep grades. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA).
