Late spring through early fall is the prime RV window, with May and June offering mild temperatures, blooming mountain laurel, and fewer bugs than midsummer. July and August bring the warmest weather and peak demand at the lake and beach, so reservations fill early. Early to mid-October is a favorite shoulder season for fall color in the Alleghenies, with cool nights and quieter campgrounds. Winter visits are possible for day use, but campground services are reduced outside the main season.

Wilson Creek and Douthat Lake are both stocked trout waters within a designated fee-fishing area during the stocking season. A Virginia fishing license and the park's daily fee permit are required during the stocked season. dwr.virginia.gov/fishing/trout/stocking-schedule/
Douthat is one of Virginia's premier state-park mountain biking destinations, with many miles of shared-use singletrack and doubletrack. Douthat State Park, VA, United States
The park is reached via Exit 27 off Interstate 64, then about seven miles north on State Route 629 (Douthat State Park Road) through a narrow mountain valley. Roanoke is roughly an hour and a half south, Lexington about 45 minutes east, and Charlottesville around two hours northeast. RV drivers should expect a winding approach road with limited shoulders, and larger rigs should take mountain grades on I-64 slowly, especially in wet or icy weather. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA).
