Late June through early September offers the most reliable weather for RV travel, with mild daytime temperatures, long daylight hours, and generally dry gravel access roads. Late spring into early summer is prime time for iceberg sightings off the Bonavista coast, while July and August bring the best chance of spotting humpback whales offshore. Shoulder months of May and September are quieter but cooler and foggier, and winter access is limited by snow, ice, and coastal wind.

The Dungeon is a collapsed sea cave with twin natural arches carved into the headland by Atlantic waves. A short walk from the gravel parking area leads to fenced viewpoints overlooking the cavern. It is the signature attraction of the park.
The Cape Bonavista Lighthouse is a restored provincial historic site about a 5 minute drive from Dungeon Provincial Park. Visitors can tour the classic red-and-white striped lightstation and explore the rocky cape. The site has a dedicated parking area suitable for most RVs.
The cliffs above The Dungeon are an excellent free vantage point for spotting icebergs in spring and humpback whales in summer. Bring binoculars and stay well back from unfenced cliff edges. Boat tours depart from nearby Bonavista Harbour.
Informal grassy paths cross the cliff-top meadows around the park, offering panoramic Atlantic views. Routes are unmarked and exposed to wind, so sturdy footwear and caution near cliff edges are essential. Free-roaming horses and cattle often graze the area.
The town of Bonavista lies just minutes from the park and offers heritage sites, restaurants, and a working fishing harbour. Attractions include the Ryan Premises National Historic Site and a replica of John Cabot's ship, the Matthew. Street parking can be tight for large RVs, so consider larger lots near the waterfront.
Dungeon Cove sits adjacent to the park and provides additional views of the dramatic coastline and sea stacks. A short stroll along the headland connects the cove viewpoints with The Dungeon itself. The exposed terrain is best explored in calm, clear weather.
The Bonavista headland is home to gulls, gannets, and other North Atlantic seabirds, which can be observed from the cliff tops. Spring and early summer bring the most active nesting and feeding behaviour offshore. The nearby Elliston puffin viewing site is a popular add-on a short drive away.

Dungeon Provincial Park, NL, Canada
The park sits just outside the town of Bonavista, about a 5 minute drive past the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse on a gravel local road. From St. John's, it is roughly 310 km and about 3.5 to 4 hours by RV via the Trans-Canada Highway and Route 230 through Clarenville. From Gander it is about 210 km, or around 2.5 hours. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips is St. John's International Airport (YYT); the final approach to the park is a short unpaved lane, so large motorhomes and long trailers should take it slowly, watch for free-roaming livestock, and be prepared for exposed crosswinds on the headland.
