Late June through August is the prime window, with warm days, swimmable water, and full campground services. July and August are the busiest months, so reservations should be made well ahead for weekends. Early September offers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and the start of fall color in the Adirondacks, making it a strong shoulder-season choice for RV travelers. Blackflies can be heavy from mid-May into mid-June.

The campground has a supervised-season sandy beach on Eighth Lake, ideal for families. Calm, shallow water and a designated swim area make it a low-key way to spend a warm afternoon.
Launch a canoe or kayak and paddle between Seventh and Eighth Lakes via the on-site carry trail. The Fulton Chain of Lakes, First Lake through Eighth Lake, forms a classic Adirondack paddling route along the Moose River watershed.
Both Seventh and Eighth Lakes are popular for lake trout, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. A valid New York State fishing license is required.
Black Bear Mountain, accessed from a trailhead near Inlet, offers open rock summits with long views over the Fulton Chain. The round trip is roughly 4 to 5 miles depending on the route chosen.
Bald Mountain, also called Rondaxe, is a short but steep hike leading to a restored fire tower with panoramic views of the Fulton Chain. The trail is under 2 miles round trip and starts from a trailhead off Rondaxe Road near Old Forge.
Raquette Lake, about 5 miles east on Route 28, is one of the largest natural lakes in the Adirondacks. Visitors can tour historic Great Camps by boat and explore the hamlet of Raquette Lake.
Inlet is a small Adirondack village about 5 miles east of the campground with shops, restaurants, a public beach on Fourth Lake, and outfitters renting paddle craft. It is a convenient base for resupply and dining.

Eighth Lake Campground, NY, United States
The campground is on NY Route 28 roughly 5 miles west of Inlet and about 5 miles east of Raquette Lake. From Utica it is approximately 60 miles northeast, around a 90 minute drive on NY Route 28. From Albany it is about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive via the Thruway and Route 28. RV drivers should be aware that Route 28 through the Adirondacks is a winding two-lane highway with rolling grades, limited passing zones, and long stretches with no fuel, so top off tanks in Old Forge or Inlet. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Syracuse Hancock International (about 2 hours west) and Albany International (about 2.5 hours southeast).
