Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the most reliable conditions for RV travel, with long daylight hours and full campground services at Quinsam Campground. May and September are excellent shoulder-season choices with fewer crowds and comfortable temperatures, though evenings can be cool. From November to March, the steelhead run right by the campsites on the Quinsam River, drawing anglers willing to tolerate wet winter weather. The Elk Falls suspension bridge is a 60-metre pedestrian span over the Campbell River canyon with direct views of the 25-metre waterfall. A short hike on easy trails allows access to the suspension bridge and north and south viewing areas, with some stairs required to reach the bridge and south viewpoint. Viewing platforms are located at the day-use area near the falls, as well as along the Canyon View Trail, offering spectacular views of the deep rock canyons and waterfalls. bcparks.ca/elk-falls-park/hiking/
This riverside loop trail follows the lower Campbell River canyon and crosses a scenic pedestrian bridge. This 4km loop trail can be accessed directly across from the Quinsam Campground along Hwy 28, or by parking at the BC Hydro public parking area at John Hart, and includes an impressive bridge crossing the lower canyon. It is popular with walkers, joggers, and anglers. bcparks.ca/elk-falls-park/hiking/
The Millennium Trail connects the upper Elk Falls day-use area with the Canyon View Loop through mature forest. This 2.5km trail can be accessed from the upper or lower areas of the park, running between Elk Falls Upper day-use area trail network and suspension bridge and the Canyon View Loop Trail. It offers a quieter alternative to the busier viewpoint trails. bcparks.ca/elk-falls-park/hiking/
The Quinsam and Campbell Rivers offer some of the best river fishing on Vancouver Island, directly accessible from the campground. Freshwater fishing is available in the Quinsam and Campbell Rivers, and anyone fishing in British Columbia must have an appropriate licence. Species include steelhead, cutthroat and Dolly Varden trout and multiple salmon runs. bcparks.ca/elk-falls-park/
The Quinsam River salmon hatchery adjoins the park and is a popular short outing for campers. The Quinsam River salmon hatchery can be accessed on trails above the Argonaut road. Fall visits coincide with active salmon returns and spawning displays. bcparks.ca/elk-falls-park/hiking/
A short interpretive trail in the day-use area showcases the park's signature old-growth stand. In the day-use area there is a short trail to the magnificent old growth Douglas fir forest. The walk is suitable for most visitors and pairs well with a stop at the falls. bcparks.ca/elk-falls-park/
Sheltered swimming holes lie near the base of the falls in the day-use area. There are swimming holes near the falls at the day-use area of the park, and there are no lifeguards on duty in BC Parks. Use caution as currents can be strong after rainfall or hydro releases. bcparks.ca/elk-falls-park/
Elk Falls supports a diverse mix of coastal rainforest wildlife viewable from park trails. Wildlife includes a variety of small mammals and birds, with great blue herons, killdeer, glaucous-winged gulls, crows, chestnut-backed chickadees, golden-crowned kinglets and starlings among the most abundant resident bird species. Dawn and dusk are the best viewing times. bcparks.ca/elk-falls-park/
Great hosts. Friendly and responsive. Trailer was exactly as described and had everything we needed for our 5 night stay. The king bed was comfy, my kids complained a bit about the bunk mattresses, they were a little thin.

Elk Falls Provincial Park, BC, Canada
Quinsam Campground at Elk Falls Park is located 3 km north of Campbell River on central Vancouver Island on Hwy 28 toward Gold River. From Nanaimo the drive is roughly 155 km (about 2 hours) north on Highway 19, and from Victoria it is about 265 km (3.5 to 4 hours). RVers arriving via BC Ferries should plan for the Nanaimo (Departure Bay or Duke Point) crossings from the mainland and note that Highway 19 is a wide, modern route with no tunnels, though Highway 28 west toward Gold River includes winding sections and logging truck traffic. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent travellers is Campbell River Airport (YBL), with Comox Valley Airport (YQQ) about 50 km south as a larger alternative.
